Rheo-diecasting AZ91D magnesium alloy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Magnesium recycling has become more important in today’s environmentally aware society. To prompt the usage of recycled magnesium scrap and further improve casting structure and properties, a novel physical approach, the rheo-diecasting process (RDC ...

Iron homeostasis disruption and lipid peroxidation in skeletal muscle during short‐term immobilization

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
14‐day casting‐induced immobilization reduced gastrocnemius muscle mass and increased non‐heme iron and ferritin heavy chain levels. Despite iron accumulation, transferrin receptor 1 and iron regulatory protein 2 were paradoxically upregulated. Lipid peroxidation was elevated without compensatory antioxidant responses.

Selecting Metal Alloy Electric Contact Materials for MEMS Switches [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
This paper presents a method for selecting metal alloys as the electric contact materials for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) metal contact switches.

Diameter dependence of SiGe nanowire thermal conductivity

open access: yes, 2011
We theoretically compute the thermal conductivity of SiGe alloy nanowires as a function of nanowire diameter, alloy concentration, and temperature, obtaining a satisfactory quantitative agreement with experimental results.

On the alloys of steel [PDF]

open access: yesAbstracts of the Papers Printed in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London
Abstract The metals which form the most valuable alloys with steel, for the purpose of manufacture into cutting instruments, are silver, platinum, rhodium, iridium, osmium, and palladium. Eight pounds of Indian steel, alloyed with 1/1000th of pure silver, formed a very hard and tenacious compound, well adapted to the manufacture of ...

Evolutionarily divergent DUF4465 domains have a common vitamin B12‐binding function

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We show that DUF4465 family proteins, widespread across bacteria from gut microbiomes, hydrothermal vents, and soil, share a common vitamin B12‐binding function. These augmented β‐jellyroll proteins bind vitamin B12 via extended loops. Our findings establish sequence‐diverse DUF4465 proteins as a widespread class of B12‐binding proteins, highlighting ...

Heat protective coatings on niobium alloys

open access: yesMechanics and Advanced Technologies, 2020
The article shows that during plasma-diffusion deposition, a multilayer coating was formed on the surface of the niobium alloy. A highly porous plasma-sprayed layer of molybdenum silicide has a significant spread in thickness (h=100...350 μm, Hμ20=6880 ...

Mass spectrometry based identification of AMP‐O‐Tris generated by Thermococcus onnurineus Cas10

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Isolated Thermococcus onnurineus Cas10 generates the noncanonical ATP‐derived product AMP‐O‐Tris while in Tris‐containing buffer as identified via mass spectrometry, revealing relaxed nucleophile selectivity under isolated conditions. These findings suggest that multiprotein Csm complex assembly restricts Cas10 reactivity toward canonical cyclic ...

Microstructural characterisation and thermal stability of an Mg-Al-Sr alloy prepared by rheo-diecasting [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
A commercial Mg-6Al-2Sr (AJ62) alloy has been prepared by a semisolid rheo-diecasting (RDC) process. The microstructure of the RDC alloy exhibits typical semisolid solidification features, i.e., 8.4 vol% primary α-Mg globules (23 μm in diameter), formed ...

Sudden anaerobization in Amphibacillus xylanus increases intracellular labile ferrous iron and inhibits cell growth

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Abruptly changing from aerobic to anaerobic conditions (sudden anaerobization) induced growth inhibition and a significant increase in intracellular labile ferrous iron in the aerotolerant anaerobe Amphibacillus xylanus. We found that free flavins mediate efficient electron transfer from NADH to ferric iron under anaerobic conditions, suggesting that ...
