Genetic structure of avian populations — allozymes revisited

Molecular Ecology, 2000
AbstractSelection on allozymes has sometimes been advanced as one explanation for the low levels of population differentiation detected in avian populations by the use of enzymatic markers. Comparisons of the amount of population subdivision (estimated by FST values or analogous indices) measured by enzymatic and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) markers in ...

Allozymes of the Cyprinid Fishes

1984
The cyprinid fishes comprise a major element of the ichthyofauna of Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America. More than 1600 species in over 275 genera make the Cyprinidae the most speciose of fish families (Nelson, 1976). Cyprinid fishes have been the subject of several allozyme studies.

Starch gel electrophoresis of allozymes

1998
Abstract Thirty years ago a novel, relatively simplistic methodology revolutionized our ability to study evolution (starch gel electrophoresis of allozymic proteins). Lewontin and Hubby (1) and Harris (2) illustrated convincingly how allozyme electrophoresis permitted a wealth of Mendelian data on populations to be gathered in a ...

SELECTION FOR AMYLASE ALLOZYMES INDROSOPHILA MELANOGASTER

Evolution, 1977
The biological significance of allozyme variation within natural populations has been a major source of controversy in population genetics since the first quantitative estimates of such variation were made (Lewontin and Hubby, 1966). A variety of theoretical and experimental strategies have been used in an effort to discriminate between 'neutralist ...

Inheritance of Allozymes in Coho Salmon

Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, 1998
Abstract We examined allozyme variation in the parents and offspring of 41 crossings of coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch. Mendelian inheritance previously unreported for Pacific salmon was confirmed at 11 loci: sAAT-4*, sAH*, ALAT*, EST-1*, βGALA*, GAPDH-2*, GPI-B2*, sMDH-A1,2*, PEPA*, PEPC*, and PNP-1*.

Detecting Cryptic Species Using Allozyme Data

2000
One of the important discoveries resulting from the application of molecular methods to systematics is the presence of far more species in many groups of organisms than have been identified by classical morphological studies. This finding has been especially significant in amphibian systematics because speciation in this group often has not been ...
