THE INVERSE ALMOST IDEAL DEMAND SYSTEM

1991
A new demand system, related to the Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) of Deaton and Muellbauer, is developed and illustrated. This Inverse AIDS (IAIDS) retains all of the desirable theoretical properties of the AIDS model with the exception of, consistent aggregation.

Some questions concerning dynamic almost ideal demand systems

Applied Economics Letters, 1996
A paper by Xepanadeas and Habib, that estimates dynamic demand models, is shown to contain some serious errors. Careful consideration of the adding-up condition is shown to be necessary when using demand systems with autoregressive disturbances. Misspecification testing should be used in all empirical work.

The semiflexible almost ideal demand system

European Economic Review, 1998
Abstract The concept of a semiflexible functional form is applied to the Almost Ideal (AI) demand system. This yields a demand model that is more parsimonious than standard ones while preserving a degree of flexibility, that satisfies the curvature property of concavity of the underlying expenditure function (at least locally), and that preserves the

A Globally Flexible, Almost Ideal Demand System

Journal of Business & Economic Statistics, 1987
The almost ideal demand system is combined with the Fourier expenditure system. Subject to the assumption that preferences are of the price-independent, generalized-logarithmic class, the resulting demand system has the desirable features of each of its components. Aggregate demand equations are consistent with preferences of a representative consumer,

Urban fuel demand in Ethiopia: an almost-ideal demand system approach

2011
This paper investigates the opportunities for reducing the pressure of urban centers on rural forest areas, using a dataset of 350 urban households in Tigrai in northern Ethiopia. We applied an almost‐ideal demand system to fuels. The results suggest that reducing the pressure of urban centers on local forests cannot be seen in isolation from broader ...

Regularization Methods on Almost Ideal Demand System

SSRN Electronic Journal, 2018
Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) has a flexible functional form that can first order approximate any sets of demand functions derived from utility maximizing behavior. This flexibility, however, comes with a cost of estimating numerously many parameters, hindering practical use of this model.

The Almost Ideal and Translog Demand Systems [PDF]

open access: possible, 2009
This chapter reviews the specification and application of the Deaton and Muellbauer (1980) Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) and the Christensen, Jorgensen, and Lau (1975) tranlog (TL) demand system. In so doing we examine various refinements to these models, including ways of incorporating demographic effects, methods by which curvature conditions can
