A generalization of an aggregate almost ideal demand system

Economics Letters, 1993
Abstract This paper constructs a more generalized aggregate AIDS which satisfies the aggregation theorem and the feasibility of the demographic variables.

A Reinterpretation of the Almost Ideal Demand System

1989
In this paper, some implicit restrictions in the ‘Almost Ideal Demand System’ (AIDS) of Deaton and Muellbauer (1980) are pointed out. Relaxing these restrictions allows the AIDS to be interpreted as a third-order translog subject to exact aggregation.

A dynamic generalisation of the almost ideal demand system

Economics Letters, 1984
Abstract This paper proposes and estimates on annual time series U.K. data (1900–1980) a dynamic generalisation of the ‘Almost Ideal Demand System’. The results support the proposed generalisation and point to the dynamic AIDS as a potentially useful tool in future applications.

Incorporating Demographic Information in an Almost Ideal Demand System

1989
In.formation on household size, age, and sex of the U.S. population is incorporated into the Almost Ideal Demand System through adult equivalent scales. Estimates for an eleven and four commodity food system are compared with their per-capita counterparts.

Linear approximations to the quadratic almost ideal demand system

Empirical Economics, 2006
This paper investigates linear approximations to the recently popular quadratic almost ideal demand system (QUAIDS) by proposing a new composite variable and conducting a simulation study. The linear approximations are especially useful when one uses nonstationary time series, to which nonlinear systems are difficult to apply properly.

Almost Ideal Demand System in Retailing

2014
We demonstrate that the Almost Ideal Demand System can be applied in a retail context. The advantage of using the system is that it fulfills the restrictions of the traditional Microeconomic theory. We also apply Singular Value Decomposition to guarantee negative semi-definiteness of the Slutsky matrix. The results are intuitive in interpretation.

Testing Homogeneity in the Linearized Almost Ideal Demand System

American Journal of Agricultural Economics, 1998
AbstractThe behavior of exact tests for homogeneity (F and Hotelling T2) is compared with size‐adjusted LR tests in the linearized AIDS model with different approximating price indexes (Stone, Paasche, Laspeyres). The Monte Carlo evidence shows that test size distortions are sensitive to the correlation structure of prices, the time‐series properties ...

Accounting for Trends in the Almost Ideal Demand System [PDF]

open access: possible, 1997
Flexible functional forms of indirect utility and expenditure functions are frequently used in approximating the behavior of utility maximizing consumers to arrive at demand systems that can be easily estimated. A common finding in time series estimations of the Almost Ideal Demand System is strong persistence in the estimated residuals.
