Nutritional effects on the expression of cryptic pigmentation in freshwater isopods

open access: yesOikos, Volume 2026, Issue 2, February 2026.
Cryptic pigmentation is a key phenotypic adaptation that helps many benthic invertebrates evade visual predators. However, little is known about whether and how the expression of pigmentation phenotypes that match the habitat background is influenced by the availability of nutritional resources.

Characterization of a Casuarina glauca Nodule-Specific Subtilisin-like Protease Gene, a Homolog of Alnus glutinosa ag12

open access: yesMolecular Plant-Microbe Interactions, 2000
In search of plant genes expressed during early interactions between Casuarina glauca and Frankia, we have isolated and characterized a C. glauca gene that has strong homology to subtilisin-like protease gene families of several plants including the ...

Avian extra‐pair paternity in the last European primeval forest

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 40, Issue 2, Page 338-346, February 2026.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Primeval forests offer a reference baseline to understand the origins and evolution of mating systems, as their relatively undisturbed environment provides a glimpse into how ecological interactions and natural selection play out in their original context.

Environmental factors affect the condition of critically endangered freshwater pearl mussels by disrupting terrestrial–aquatic resource connectivity

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 8, Issue 2, February 2026.
This regional‐scale field study shows that critically threatened freshwater pearl mussels rely substantially on terrestrial organic matter, indicating strong connectivity between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. However, human pressures at the catchment scale reduced this resource connectivity.

Floodplain environmental change during the younger dryas and holocene: Evidence from the lower kennet valley, south central England [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Many lowland rivers across northwest Europe exhibit broadly similar behavioural responses to glacial-interglacial transitions and landscape development. Difficulties exist in assessing these, largely because the evidence from many rivers remains limited
