ALOS PALSAR for characterizing wooded savannas in Northern Australia
2007 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2007With the successful launch of Japan's Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) Phased Array L-band SAR (PALSAR) and the recent provision of a Japanese Earth Resources Satellite (JERS-1) Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) mosaic for north Australia, significant opportunities for characterizing, mapping and monitoring the structural diversity and biomass of ...

Swell parameters retrieval using ALOS/PALSAR data
2013 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium - IGARSS, 2013We have developed retrieval methods for swell parameters such as wave height, wavelength, and wave propagation direction from images of ALOS/PALSAR taken over coastal seas around Japan. The retrieval methods for wavelength and wave direction used the PALSAR image spectrum.

Feasibility study on polarimetric use and calibration of ALOS/PALSAR
IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2003Calibration and application of polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) onboard the Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) is discussed using airborne L-band SAR data. We find that even a simple calibration is useful for polarimetric classification, if the system has a small cross-talk and good channel valance.

Forest monitoring with JERS-1/SAR and ALOS/PALSAR
2007 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2007JERS-1/SAR images taken in 1990's and ALOS/PALSAR images taken in 2000's are used and examined the deforestation status during ~14 years. Many trees had been fallen by a typhoon hit in 2004 in a test site, Tomakomai. There is also a plantation area and the site show active change during the term.

Prediction and detection of Faraday rotation in ALOS PALSAR data
2007 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2007Faraday rotation can degrade the quality of low- frequency spaceborne SAR data, making an estimation and correction of these effects a prerequisite for data quality continuity. In this paper, methods for predicting and estimating Faraday rotation are presented and tested on ALOS/PALSAR data. A first example for unambiguous detection of Faraday rotation

Object-based landfast sea ice detection over West Antarctica using time series ALOS PALSAR data
, 2020Landfast sea ice (fast ice) is an important feature prevalent around the Antarctic coast, which is affected by climate change and energy exchanges with the atmosphere and ocean.

Capabilities of Full-Polarimetric PALSAR/ALOS for Snow Extent Mapping
IGARSS 2008 - 2008 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2008Snow classification using full-polarimetric PALSAR data is investigated in this paper. It is first demonstrated that dry snowpack over frozen ground slightly affects polarimetric signature at L-band. Given the fact that PALSAR data do not permit the use of a simplistic threshold-based method, a refined method for Snow Covered Area mapping is outlined ...
