Intensive versus conventional glycaemic control for treating diabetic foot ulcers [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Background  The estimated likelihood of lower limb amputation is 10 to 30 times higher amongst people with diabetes compared to those without diabetes. Of all non-traumatic amputations in people with diabetes, 85% are preceded by a foot ulcer.

Sodium‐glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors and the risk of late onset epilepsy: A real‐world cohort study

open access: yesEpilepsia, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective Late onset epilepsy (LOE) is associated with substantial morbidity. Sodium‐glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) may exert neuroprotective effects. This study evaluated the association between SGLT2i and risk of LOE among older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Precision therapies for genetic epilepsies in 2025: Promises and pitfalls

open access: yesEpilepsia Open, EarlyView.
Abstract By targeting the underlying etiology, precision therapies offer an exciting paradigm shift to improve the stagnant outcomes of drug‐resistant epilepsies, including developmental and epileptic encephalopathies. Unlike conventional antiseizure medications (ASMs) which only treat the symptoms (seizures) but have no effect on the underlying ...

Antioxidant Activity and Inhibition of Carbohydrate Hydrolyzing Enzymes by Underutilized Parts From Some Plant‐Based Foods and Their Effect on Postprandial Hyperglycemia

open access: yesFood Chemistry International, EarlyView.
The underutilized parts viz: pawpaw seed, banana, plantain, and potato peels showed promising antioxidant and inhibition of α‐amylase and α‐glucosidase activities (IC50 values ≤ 100 μg/mL). Similarly, pawpaw seed, banana, plantain, and potato peels reduced postprandial hyperglycemia in sucrose‐ and maltose‐induced hyperglycemia in rats.

.ALPHA.-Glucosidase Inhibitor from Bergenia ligulata

open access: yesJournal of Oleo Science, 2008
Inhibitory compound of alpha-glucosidase activity, (+)-afzelechin (1), was isolated from rhizomes of Bergenia ligulata. The structure was identified by IR, EI-MS, (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopy. The ID(50) (50% inhibition dose) value of compound 1 was 0.13 mM. To investigate the structure-activity relationship, (+)-afzelechin tetraacetate (2), (+)-5,7,
