Central administration of alpha-MSH antiserum augments fever in the rabbit
American Journal of Physiology-Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology, 1986alpha-Melanocyte-stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) has a marked antipyretic action when given centrally or peripherally, and the concentration of this peptide within the septal region of the brain increases during fever. To assess the significance of endogenous central alpha-MSH in fever, antiserum was given to rabbits via a cannula implanted in the ...

CSF alpha-MSH in dementia of the Alzheimer type.
Neurology, 1988We measured CSF alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone-like immunoreactivity (alpha-MSH-LI) in 35 patients with dementia of the Alzheimer type (DAT) and in 27 healthy control subjects. Mean alpha-MSH-LI concentration was significantly decreased in DAT patients as compared with age-matched controls.

alpha-MSH-induzierte anorexigene Signalwege in murinen Hypothalamuszellen

Synthesis of cyclic alpha-MSH peptides
1998Cyclic lactam analogs of α-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH) have been shown to be potent agonists in the frog skin bioassay [Al-Obeidi, F. et al., J. Med. Chem., 32 (1989) 2555], demonstrating melanocortin-1 (MC1) receptor activity. We synthesized cyclic α-MSH(1-13) and α-MSH(4-10) lactam analogs.

Is alpha-MSH deficiency the cause of Alzheimer's disease?
Medical Hypotheses, 1986The hypothesis is that a functional deficiency of alpha-melanotropin (alpha-MSH) is the primary event in the development of Alzheimer's disease. Beginning with the concept that Alzheimer's disease occurs because of a deficiency of a neurotrophic factor specific for central cholinergic neurons data is then presented to support the hypothesis that alpha ...

Studies on factors influencing human plasma alpha-MSH.
Anticancer research, 1990The various physiological effects of alpha-MSH, mainly on the CNS and on pigmentation in animal models, are well documented in the literature. Only a few investigators have confirmed similar properties in the human. However, the possible physiopathological role played by this hormone in human melanoma is still poorly defined.

Molecular basis of the alpha-MSH/IL-1 antagonism.
Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 2000The neuropeptide alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) is recognized as a potent mediator of immune and inflammatory reactions. Accordingly, alpha-MSH in vitro, as well as in vivo, antagonizes the proinflammatory activities of cytokines such as interleukin-1 (IL-1), IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha). Since the molecular basis

[Effect of ultraviolet rays on alpha-MSH plasma concentration].
Zeitschrift fur Hautkrankheiten, 1984Influence of Ultraviolet Rays on alpha-MSH Plasmaconcentration. Ultraviolet total-body irradiation induces changes of alpha-MSH plasmaconcentration dependent on wave-length of the source of radiation as well as skin type of the volunteers. Following UV-A total-body irradiation, we observed a significant increase of the proteohormone alpha-MSH, whereas ...

Studies of alpha-MSH-containing nerves in the brain.
Progress in biochemical pharmacology, 1981alpha-Melanocyte stimulating hormone (alpha-MSH) immunofluorescence was observed in the rat brain using a highly specific and well-characterized antibody. alpha-MSH was contained in the arcuate nucleus cell bodies and in varicose fibers distributed throughout the brain stem. alpha-MSH-containing fibers were present in various nuclei of the hypothalamus,
