Time after time – circadian clocks through the lens of oscillator theory

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Oscillator theory bridges physics and circadian biology. Damped oscillators require external drivers, while limit cycles emerge from delayed feedback and nonlinearities. Coupling enables tissue‐level coherence, and entrainment aligns internal clocks with environmental cues.

Thermal performance of heat and water recovery systems: Role of condensing heat exchanger material

open access: yesCleaner Engineering and Technology, 2020
A significant amount of sensible and latent heat can be recovered at low temperatures from the flue gas of process heating equipment. However, the condensation of acids and water vapor makes the flue gas a highly-corrosive environment, which is a ...

Development of heat transfer performance in tubular heat exchanger with improved NACA0024 vortex generator

open access: yesCase Studies in Thermal Engineering, 2021
The aim of the experiment was to explore the thermal and fluid flow characteristics inside the tube heat exchanger. To produce and enhance the flow circulations and longitudinal vortex within the tube, an improved NACA0024 vortex generator (VG) was ...

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Sustainability Assessment of Alternative Energy Fuels for Aircrafts—A Life Cycle Analysis Approach

open access: yesFuels
Aviation is of crucial importance for the transportation sector and fundamental for the economy as it facilitates trade and private travel. Nonetheless, this sector is responsible for a great amount of global carbon dioxide emissions, exceeding 920 ...

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Backup protection with accelerating strategy based on fault control of modular multilevel converters in medium‐voltage direct current distribution network

open access: yesIET Renewable Power Generation, 2023
The medium‐voltage DC distribution network with multiple DC feeders is more cost‐effective when equipped with switches than DC circuit breakers. Under such conditions, the converters with fault‐handling capacity are blocked to clear the fault, which will

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Transparency, moisture barrier property, and performance of the alternative solar cell encapsulants based on PU/PVDC blend reinforced with different types of cellulose nanocrystals

open access: yesMaterials for Renewable and Sustainable Energy, 2018
Two different types of cellulose nanocrystals, derived from water hyacinth fibers and microfibrillated cellulose (MFC), were prepared using an acid hydrolysis treatment.
