The many faces of fear: comparing the pathways and impacts of nonconsumptive predator effects on prey populations. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2008
BACKGROUND:Most ecological models assume that predator and prey populations interact solely through consumption: predators reduce prey densities by killing and consuming individual prey.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

The triangulation between Arctic birds, Arctic foxes and Arctic lemmings

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution
Many studies have suggested that Arctic predators preying on lemmings, especially the Arctic fox, take advantage of the high prey densities during peak years, but have to switch to alternative prey during years of low lemming density, thereby forcing ...

Biodiversity vs. biocontrol: positive and negative effects of alternative prey on control of slugs by carabid beetles

open access: yes, 2006
Environment-friendly farming techniques seek to increase invertebrate biodiversity in part with the intention of encouraging greater numbers of predators that will help to control crop pests.

Risk of predation to fish larvae in the presence of alternative prey: effects of prey size and number

open access: yesMarine Ecology Progress Series, 1993
Studies examining the effects of alternative prey on the risk of predation to fish larvae have found a reduced risk to larvae, but only when in the presence of a relatively high number of alternative prey. However, all studies using zooplankton as alternative prey have used zooplankters smaller in body size than the fish larvae.

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Characterizing juvenile salmon predation risk during early marine residence.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2021
Predation mortality can influence the distribution and abundance of fish populations. While predation is often assessed using direct observations of prey consumption, potential predation can be predicted from co-occurring predator and prey densities ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Optimal foraging predators in Leslie Gower models with alternative prey

open access: yes, 2011
International audienceOptimal foraging theory defines the diet choice of a predator by imposing that it chooses the prey that is instantaneously the most beneficial for him [1].
