Effect of Laser Deoxidation on Adhesive‐Bonded Aluminum in an Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser ablation of aluminum under oxygen‐free conditions. The goal is to produce oxide‐free substrates that enable improved adhesive bonding with epoxy. Optimized laser parameters (90% overlap, 300 µJ) combined with oxide‐free substrates result in the highest tensile strength of the adhesive bond.

Four‐Point Bending Tests at High Temperatures on Commercial MgO‐C Refractory Bricks with and Without Recyclate Considering Different Carbon Contents

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Four‐point bending tests are conducted in an argon atmosphere on commercial MgO‐C brick grades with and without MgO‐C recyclate from room temperature up to 1300 °C. No detrimental effect of the MgO‐C recyclates on bending strength is found. Instead, a decisive influence of the total carbon content is observed, with lower total carbon contents ...

Enhanced heterogeneous nucleation on oxides in Al alloys by intensive shearing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Oxides, in liquid aluminium alloys, can cause severe difficulties during casting, contribute to the formation of cast defects and degrade the mechanical properties of cast components.

Combined Process‐ and Phase‐Field‐Simulation to Predict the Microstructure of Single‐Crystal Ni‐Based Superalloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A combined finite element and phase‐field approach predicts the evolution of microstructure during the directional solidification of Ni‐based superalloys. The model reveals how withdrawal rate, temperature gradient, and wall thickness control the dendrite spacing, highlighting the strong effect of surface regions in thin sections where dendrite growth ...

Nonlinear Short-term Prediction of Aluminum Foil Thickness via Global Regressor Combination

open access: yesApplied Artificial Intelligence, 2017
In this study, short-term prediction of aluminum foil thickness time-series data recorded during cold-rolling process was investigated. The locally projective nonlinear noise reduction was applied in order to improve the predictability of the time series.

Full thermo-mechanical coupling using eXtended finite element method in quasi-transient crack propagation

open access: yesAdvanced Modeling and Simulation in Engineering Sciences, 2018
This work aims to present a complete full coupling eXtended finite element formulation of the thermo-mechanical problem of cracked bodies. The basic concept of the extended finite element method is discussed in the context of mechanical and thermal ...

Quantitative ultraviolet measurements on wetted thin-layer chromatography plates using a charge-coupled device camera [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
This paper presents the first study of the UV imaging of spots on thin-layer chromatographic plates whilst still wet with solvent. Imaging of spots of benzophenone during and after development was carried out using a charge-coupled device camera.
