Aluminium carbide formation in interpenetrating graphite/aluminium composites
Materials Science & Engineering A: Structural Materials: Properties, Microstructure and Processing, 2007We have produced interpenetrating graphite/aluminium composites by gas pressure infiltration of aluminium alloys with varying silicon content into porous graphite preforms. Infiltration experiments at 750 °C have shown that a silicon content of up to 18 wt.% can reduce the formation of aluminium carbide but cannot completely deter it.

Extraction over extended periods, using ethyl alcohol, acetone, and methyl ethyl ketone as extractants, reduced the proportion of stearic acid to that of a monobasic soap.

In particular, Al2009/(SiC)w, Al6061/(SiC)w, and Al6061(Al2O3)p metal matrix composites were used, and the adopted temperature were in the range 20°C-160°C.

Oxidation behaviour of carbon/aluminium and SiC/aluminium composites
Journal of Materials Science, 1996Isothermal oxidation of 6061 Al, reinforced with chopped carbon fibres and SiC particles, was studied to investigate the applicability of these composites in the temperature range 300–500 °C, in terms of their degradation due to oxidation. Carbon/aluminium composite suffered a tremendous loss in weight at 350 °C.

Journal of Materials Science, 1972Reversed bending fatigue studies have been performed on boron-aluminium and carbon-aluminium fibre composites. The superior fatigue resistance of the boron composites arises partly from the use of an alloy matrix, but mainly from the more advanced development stage attained in the manufacture of the boron composite.

Journal of Microscopy, 1999Aluminium–matrix composites containing ~55 vol.% AlN particles were fabricated by melt infiltration of aluminium into an AlN preform under a pressure of up to 130 MPa. Two different AlN powders (H.C. Starck, Goslar, Germany, and ESK, Elektroschmelzwerk, Kempten, Germany) and four types of aluminium alloy (2024, 1070, 6060 and 5754) were used.

Preparation of aluminium foam composite
