Aluminothermic reduction of metal oxides by concentrated solar irradiation

JOM, 2010
The aluminothermic reduction (ATR) of metals from oxides has been done since the mid-19th century. A mixture of powdered aluminum and oxides of metals is placed into a crucible and ignited. The process requires a considerable expense of electrical energy. The technology described in this paper substitutes electrical energy with solar energy.

Production of Al-Ti Master Alloy by Aluminothermic Reduction Technique

Canadian Metallurgical Quarterly, 2007
Abstract Aluminum-titanium master alloys were prepared with an aluminothermic reduction of titanium dioxide dissolved in cryolite (NaF/AlF3 = 2.5 molar ratio)-alumina melts in the presence of aluminum. The effects of time, the concentration of the titanium dioxide and temperature were investigated by spectrophotometer, scanning electron microscopy (SEM)

Aluminothermic reduction: a sustainable method for producing Fe65Si26B9 phase change material

17th International Ferro-Alloys Congress
Fe65Si26B9 (wt.%) is proposed to be a high-temperature phase change material (PCM) for a thermal energy storage system, due to its high latent heat of fusion and minimal volume change during solidification. Currently, the production of Fe65Si26B9 alloy involves mixing FeSi alloys with either pure boron (B) or FeB alloys.
