Impact Wear of Flash- and Aluminothermic-Welded Hypereutectoid Steel Rail Joints

Tribology Transactions, 2021
High-speed, high-load railway development has necessitated a deeper understanding of the wear behavior and mechanism of welded steel railway joints subjected to repeated impact.

Failure modes in aluminothermic rail welds under high axle load conditions

Engineering Failure Analysis, 2004
Abstract Aluminothermic welding of rails is widely used within the railway industry for in-track welding during re-rail and defect replacement. The process provides flexibility and low capital cost, but suffers from variable quality in finished welds, due to the inherent limitations of the processes used, and their operator dependency.

Improving service properties of welded joints produced by aluminothermic welding

Welding International, 2014
The results of metallographic studies of welded joints in rails produced by aluminothermic welding are presented. The results of hardness measurements of these welded joints show that the mean hardness level of the metal of the welded joint is 240–290 HV. According to the TU 0921-127-01124323-2005 standards, the hardness values do not fully satisfy the

Method of aluminothermic welds qualification for down conductors and earth-terminations systems

2013 International Symposium on Lightning Protection (XII SIPDA), 2013
The IEC 62305-3 imposes the use of copper cables of at least 50 mm2 for down conductors used in lightning protection. The cross section is an important factor to carry lightning currents in LPS. However, it is possible to connect these conductors in various ways.

Measurement of Residual Stresses in Aluminothermic Rail Welds Using Neutron Diffraction Technique

Materials Science Forum, 2014
It is understood that residual stresses in aluminothermic rail welds play an important role in the fatigue behaviour of the welds. Measuring the residual stresses in the critical areas and finding the correlation between these stresses and welding parameters can be useful in order to alter the welding procedure and improve the fatigue performance of ...

Metallurgical and tribological aspects for squat formation in the aluminothermic weld HAZ edges of rails welded using aluminothermy

Industrial Lubrication and Tribology, 2020
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present the results of a metallurgical, mechanical and tribological characterization of the weld and heat-affected zone (HAZ) of aluminothermic welding of premium rails used in heavy haul, looking into the origins of the squat defects associated with rail wear.
