Semi-probabilistic method for residual lifetime of aluminothermic welded rails with foot cracks [PDF]

open access: yesTheoretical and Applied Fracture Mechanics, 2016
Abstract One of the most frequent and dangerous failure modes in continuous welded rails is fatigue crack propagation terminated by brittle fracture. Due to the brittleness of the weld material and HAZ and the scatter in its mechanical properties, a statistical approach is necessary.

Effect of Bismuth Oxide Particles Size on the Thermal Excitation and Combustion Properties of Thermite Systems. [PDF]

open access: yesChemistryOpen, 2021
The particle size of Bi2O3 in thermite systems has an effect on the thermal excitation threshold and combustion performance. The increase of the particle size increases the thermal excitation threshold, reduces the amount of heat release, accelerates the combustion rate, and reduces the duration of combustion.

Common failures in aluminothermic welding process and proposal for their prevention [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Aluminothermic welding of rail is still a unique method for joining the rails because of its flexibility and ease of performance, both during the reconstruction and construction of a new track, as well as in the ongoing maintenance of the continuity of the track.

A Reliability Study of Phased Array Ultrasonic Inspections Applied to Aluminothermic Welds in Rails [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Nowadays, long welded railway rails are achieved by means of aluminothermic and flush-butt welding processes. Compared to bolted joints, welds proved to be effective in terms of reduced wheel damage, ride comfort and maintenance. However, even if the event is inexplicably not considered in relevant standards, surface cracks often initiate within the ...

The thermomechanical modeling of aluminothermic welds affected by different defects [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
This work is devoted to the analysis of the thermo-mechanical behavior of thermite welded rails by numerical simulation. A beam with the profile of an UIC60rail and a weld in the middle, is simulated with the same function of an Hertzian pressure and with the same boundary conditions.

Continuous Hot‐Dip Galvanizing of Medium‐Manganese Third‐Generation Advanced High‐Strength Steels

open access: yessteel research international, Volume 94, Issue 11, November 2023., 2023
Herein, the effects of process atmosphere pO2 on the reactive wetting of two medium‐Mn third‐generation advanced high‐strength steels during continuous hot‐dip galvanizing are interrogated. The substrates are austenitized, flash‐pickled, intercritically annealed, and galvanized in a conventional 0.2 wt% Al (dissolved) bath.

Progress in the Preparation of Large‐Size High‐Performance CuCr Alloys

open access: yesAdvances in Materials Science and Engineering, Volume 2022, Issue 1, 2022., 2022
CuCr contact material, whose mass fraction of Cr is generally in the range of 25% to 50%, is one of the most desirable contact materials for medium‐ and high‐voltage vacuum switches. The homogeneity and denseness of CuCr alloy are the keys to its application.
