A zinc finger transcription factor HvATF1 regulates aluminum tolerance in barley.
Journal of Experimental Botany, 2020Aluminum (Al) toxicity is a major abiotic stress restricting crop production in acid soils. To detoxify Al stress, plants adopt internal and external mechanisms of Al tolerance.

The role of solute transporters in aluminum toxicity and tolerance
Physiologia Plantarum, 2020The prevalence of aluminum ions (Al3+) under acidic soil conditions inhibits primary root elongation and hinders plant growth and productivity. Al3+ alters the membrane potential, displaces critical ions in the apoplast and disrupts intracellular ionic concentrations by targeting membrane‐localized solute transporters.

Screening of grape genotypes for aluminum tolerance and evaluation on selecting indices
Soil science and plant nutrition (Tokyo), 2020Grape is intolerant of aluminum. This intolerance leads to severe aluminum poisoning when the plants are cultivated in acidic soil, resulting in a decline in their yield and quality.

INHERITANCE OF ALUMINUM TOLERANCE IN WHEAT
Canadian Journal of Genetics and Cytology, 1978Aluminum tolerant and aluminum sensitive wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em Thell) cultivars representing different parental backgrounds were used to study the inheritance of response to aluminium. F1, F2, F3, and backcross generations from crosses of four soft red winter wheat cultivars were grown in nutrient solutions containing 8 ppm aluminum.

Calmodulin (CaM) is a calcium ion-binding protein that regulates a variety of cellular functions through its downstream target proteins. Previous studies have reported that overexpression of CaM enhances tolerance to stress, including resistance to salt, heat, cold, drought and plant pathogens.

The beneficial effects of organic acids (OAs) excretion from plant roots were first proposed as being associated with the mechanism of superior phosphorus utilization by the cluster roots of white lupin (Lupinus albus L.), and these effects are now ...

Biotechniques for improving acid aluminum tolerance in alfalfa
Plant Cell Reports, 1993Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), cultivars ARC, Regen Y and Saranac were selected in vitro in a recently developed acid/aluminum toxic media. The new media produced higher initiation rates and higher fresh callus weights than those obtainable with the media described by Meredith and Connor for the selection of aluminum resistant variants in Nicotiana ...

Making Plants Aluminum Tolerant
Science, 1997Aluminum toxicity is a major problem to agricultural crops, affecting some 30% to 40% of the world9s arable lands and reducing yields by as much as 80%. Now, Mexican researchers have come up with a possible genetic-engineering fix. They report on page 1566 of this issue of Science that they were able to make tobacco and papaya plants ...

Modification of DNA Checkpoints to Confer Aluminum Tolerance
Trends in Plant Science, 2017Although aluminum (Al) toxicity represents a global agricultural problem, the biochemical targets for Al remain elusive. Recently identified Arabidopsis mutants with increased Al tolerance provide evidence of DNA as one of the main targets of Al. This insight could lead the way for novel strategies to generate Al-tolerant crop plants.
