Mandibular bone grafts for reconstruction of alveolar clefts

This study evaluated the effect of mandibular bone grafts for reconstruction of alveolar clefts. The study included 25 patients with cleft lip and alveolar process only and three patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate, with a median postoperative follow-up of 8 months (range, 6 to 17 months).

The use of allogeneic bone for alveolar cleft grafting

Freeze-dried bone marrow has been used for grafting alveolar clefts. In all instances in which canines were present, they erupted through the grafted allogeneic bone. The ability to avoid donor site morbidity, coupled with successful eruption of canines through the grafted allogeneic bone, represents an additional technique for treating alveolar clefts.
