Molecular phylogeny of unculturable Karyorelictea (Alveolata, Ciliophora)
Zoologica Scripta, 2009Karyorelictea is a class of traditionally unculturable ciliates characterized by a non‐dividing macronucleus. Their classification has been recently revised and morphological redescription of many species has been performed as well. On the contrary, molecular data of karyorelictean ciliates are largely underrepresented in public databases.

Genetic diversity of the crustacean parasite Hematodinium (Alveolata, Syndinea)
European Journal of Protistology, 2010In the absence of distinct morphological characteristics, knowledge of genetic relationships within and between protist parasite species is important for determining reservoir hosts and understanding the biology of the causative agents of emerging diseases.

This work investigates whether the honeycomb worm Sabellaria alveolata (Polychaeta) actively selects foraminiferal tests to build its arenaceous bioconstructions and if the tests are chosen based on a defined criterion. To this purpose, both foraminiferal content and structure of communities were compared across samples of bioconstructions and samples ...

Protein synthesis during embryogenesis of Sabellaria alveolata L. (Polychaete annelid)
Experimental Cell Research, 1974Abstract Protein synthesis before and after fertilization in Sabellaria alveolata has been investigated. Two major increases in protein synthesis were seen: one at fertilization and one after the third cleavage. These are independent of uptake rate modifications and are poorly affected by actinomycin D treatment.

Ultrastructure and phylogeny of colpodellids (Colpodellida, Alveolata)
Biology Bulletin, 2009The structure of cells of the predatory flagellates Colpodella pseudoedax and C. unguis was studied. The cell was found to contain two heterodynamic flagella, three-membrane pellicle, micropores, subpellicular microtubules, microtubular open conoid, roptries, micronemes, extrusive organelles (trichocysts), and mitochondria with tubular cristae.

Larval neurogenesis in Sabellaria alveolata reveals plasticity in polychaete neural patterning
Evolution & Development, 2008SUMMARY The investigation of neurogenesis in polychaetes not only facilitates insights into the developmental biology of this group, but also provides new data for phylogenetic analyses. This should eventually lead toward a better understanding of metazoan evolution including key issues such as the ontogenetic processes that underlie body ...
