Alveolata histone-like proteins have different evolutionary origins [PDF]
Abstract Prokaryotic histone-like proteins (Hlps) are abundant proteins found in bacterial and plastid nucleoids. Hlps are also found in the eukaryotic dinoflagellates and the apicomplexans, two major lineages of the Alveolata. It may be expected that Hlps of both groups were derived from the same ancestral Alveolates.

The persistent homology of mitochondrial ATP synthases
Summary: Relatively little is known about ATP synthase structure in protists, and the investigated ones exhibit divergent structures distinct from yeast or animals.

An Alveolata secretory machinery adapted to parasite host cell invasion
Apicomplexa are unicellular eukaryotes and obligate intracellular parasites, including Plasmodium (the causative agent of malaria) and Toxoplasma (one of the most widespread zoonotic pathogens). Rhoptries, one of their specialized secretory organelles, undergo regulated exocytosis during invasion1.

Phylogenetic study of Class Armophorea (Alveolata, Ciliophora) based on 18S-rDNA data
The 18S rDNA phylogeny of Class Armophorea, a group of anaerobic ciliates, is proposed based on an analysis of 44 sequences (out of 195) retrieved from the NCBI/GenBank database.

Prostomatean ciliates play important roles in the flow of material and energy in aquatic microbial food webs, and thus have attracted wide attention for over a century. Their taxonomy and systematics are, however, still poorly understood because of their

This work reviewed the direct and indirect effects of fires on microbial communities and the resilience strategies microbes use to withstand high temperatures . ABSTRACT Fire, whether occurring on the surface or underground, significantly influences soil microbial dynamics by reshaping community composition, functional diversity and overall soil and ...

Benthic assemblages of rock pools in northern Portugal: seasonal and between-pool variability
We investigated the seasonal (winter vs summer and within season) and spatial (between-pool) variability of benthic assemblages of rock pools at mid-intertidal level along the shore of Viana do Castelo (North Portugal).
