Morphology of Guard Hairs in Amazonian Marsupials: Intergeneric Variation, Habitat and Habit Association in a Phylogenetic Framework of the Order Didelphimorphia

open access: yesActa Zoologica, Volume 107, Issue 4, Page 460-469, October 2026.
ABSTRACT The cuticle and medulla of guard hairs exhibit distinct morphological patterns among mammalian species. To investigate this variability in marsupials from the Brazilian Amazon, we analysed guard hairs from nine Didelphimorphia species and incorporated data from an additional 25 didelphid species.

Dryland Soil Rewetting Induces Strong Volatile Organic Compound Emissions With Potential to Form Ozone and Aerosols

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 32, Issue 10, October 2026.
Rainfall after drought triggers strong petrichor VOC emissions from dryland soils. These emissions are chemically diverse, shaped by aridity and soil microbial community, and can increase regional ozone and secondary organic aerosol formation potentials.

Health, biodiversity, and natural resource use on the Amazon frontier: an ecosystem approach

open access: yesCadernos de Saúde Pública, 2001
This study aims to improve the health of rural Amazonian communities through the development and application of a participatory ecosystem approach to human health assessment. In the study area marked seasonal fluctuations dictate food availability, water

Impacts of Species Introductions on the Trait Diversity of Interacting Avian Frugivores and Fleshy‐Fruited Plants Depend on Native Trait Diversity

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Biogeography, Volume 35, Issue 10, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim The introduction of non‐native species to native ecological communities by humans is a major driver of global biodiversity change. Studying how species introductions influence interacting species is essential to understanding possible functional consequences of global change because biotic interactions are ecologically crucial.

Dental Complexity and Crown Relief Document Occlusal Wear Along the Tooth Row in West Indian Manatees

open access: yesMarine Mammal Science, Volume 42, Issue 4, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Sirenians are a lineage of herbivorous marine mammals morphologically specialized for exploiting aquatic vegetation in shallow‐water habitats. In manatees (Trichechus), continuous horizontal tooth replacement may represent a solution for mitigating heavy dental wear incurred by a diet of abrasive plant material.

Phosphorus addition shifts elevated CO2 effects on soil respiration from rhizosphere to root pathways in a mature eucalypt woodland

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 252, Issue 1, Page 100-113, October 2026.
Summary diagram of the utilization of additional carbohydrates fixed under elevated CO2 belowground in natural low‐phosphorus (P) (a) and P‐fertilized (b) conditions. Soil respiration consists of heterotrophic respiration from microbial activity in bulk soil, autotrophic respiration from fine‐root activity and rhizomicrobial respiration driven by ...

SWOT Discharge Accuracy Benchmarked in South America

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 17, 16 September 2026.
Abstract The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite mission offers unprecedented estimates of global river discharge. This study provides a first continental‐scale assessment of SWOT Consensus discharge performance across South America and compares it with a large‐scale hydrodynamic model and in situ observations.
