Real-time Model-based Image Color Correction for Underwater Robots

open access: yes, 2020
Recently, a new underwater imaging formation model presented that the coefficients related to the direct and backscatter transmission signals are dependent on the type of water, camera specifications, water depth, and imaging range.

First wide-angle view of channelized turbidity currents links migrating cyclic steps to flow characteristics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Field observations of turbidity currents remain scarce, and thus there is continued debate about their internal structure and how they modify underlying bedforms.

Variability of Internally Generated Turbulence in an Estuary, from 100 Days of Continuous Observations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
We present detailed observations of internally generated turbulence in a sheared, stratified natural flow, as well as an analysis of the external factors leading to its generation and temporal variability.

Polarization-Based Reconfigurable Tags for Robust Ambient Backscatter Communications

open access: yesIEEE Open Journal of the Communications Society, 2020
Ambient backscatter communication is an emerging and promising low-energy technology for the Internet of Things. In such a system, a tag sends a binary message to a reader by backscattering a radio frequency signal generated by an ambient source. The tag

Cryogenic Stress-Driven Grain Growth Observed via Microcompression with in situ Electron Backscatter Diffraction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
The deformation of materials at cryogenic temperature is of interest for space, arctic, and fundamental science applications. In this work, a custom-built cooling system attached to a commercial picoindenter was used for in situ cryogenic ...

Aerosols in the tropical and subtropical UT/LS: in-situ measurements of submicron particle abundance and volatility [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Processes occurring in the tropical upper troposphere (UT), the Tropical Transition Layer (TTL), and the lower stratosphere (LS) are of importance for the global climate, for stratospheric dynamics and air chemistry, and for their influence on the global

Effect of Laser Deoxidation on Adhesive‐Bonded Aluminum in an Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser ablation of aluminum under oxygen‐free conditions. The goal is to produce oxide‐free substrates that enable improved adhesive bonding with epoxy. Optimized laser parameters (90% overlap, 300 µJ) combined with oxide‐free substrates result in the highest tensile strength of the adhesive bond.
