The Effects of Ambient Noise on Vigilance Performance [PDF]

open access: yesHuman Factors: The Journal of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, 1969
The effects of continuous noise versus intermittent noise on subjects performing an audiovisual checking task were examined. Although there was no difference between the effects of the two kinds of noise on total errors, intermittent noise produced a larger number of omission errors than did continuous noise.

Head wave correlations in ambient noise [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2016
Ambient ocean noise is processed with a vertical line array to reveal coherent time-separated arrivals suggesting the presence of head wave multipath propagation. Head waves, which are critically propagating water waves created by seabed waves traveling parallel to the water-sediment interface, can propagate faster than water-only waves. Such eigenrays

High‐Temperature Nanoindentation of Metals: Assessing Thermal Drift, Frame Compliance, and Chemical Composition Effects on the Reported Mechanical Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Do not let thermal drift and instrument artifacts deceive high‐temperature nanoindentation results. We compare classical Oliver–Pharr and automatic image recognition analyses across steels and a Ni alloy to quantify these effects. Accounting for artifacts reveals systematic softening with temperature, while Cr and Ni additions boost resistance ...

Bioinspired Shape‐Memory Hook Fasteners With Programmable Interlocking and Silent Release

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Bioinspired hook fasteners made from epoxy shape‐memory polymers are shown to switch between strong, secure attachment and gentle, silent release when heated. By combining programmable geometry and material response, these adaptive fasteners outperform commercial systems in strength and noise control, enabling new solutions for robotics, medical ...

Nanoelectronic thermometers optimised for sub-10 millikelvin operation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We report the cooling of electrons in nanoelectronic Coulomb blockade thermometers below 4 mK. Above 7 mK the devices are in good thermal contact with the environment, well isolated from electrical noise, and not susceptible to self-heating.

Ambient energy harvesting from colored multiplicative noise

open access: yesEnergy Reports, 2022
The present study examines the effect of multiplicative Gaussian noise on the conversion of vibration energy into electrical energy. Nonlinear oscillators are considered in the present model.

Encyclopedia of 2D β′‐In2Se3 Growth Using Chemical Vapor Deposition: The Effects of Synthesis Parameters Onto Material Quality

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A distinct semi‐confined inner‐tube chemical vapor deposition geometry enables reproducible, large‐area growth of phase‐pure 2D β′‐In2Se3 from InI + Se precursors. Engineering local vapor transport and optimizing precursor delivery and temperature–time conditions yield uniform continuous films.

Noise levels and sources in the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary and the St. Lawrence River Estuary [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Although ambient (background) noise in the ocean is a topic that has been widely studied since pre-World War II, the effects of noise on marine organisms has only been a focus of concern for the last 25 years.

Analysis and Research on the Centimeter Band Receiver Amplitude Calibration Method

open access: yesAdvances in Astronomy, 2020
The receiver is a signal receiving device in a radio telescope system. As an important parameter to characterize the receiver performance, noise temperature is very practical to calibrate accurately. The traditional receiver noise temperature calibration
