The communicative function of ambiguity in language [PDF]

open access: yesCognition, 2012
We present a general information-theoretic argument that all efficient communication systems will be ambiguous, assuming that context is informative about meaning. We also argue that ambiguity allows for greater ease of processing by permitting efficient linguistic units to be re-used.

Enhanced Micro-Doppler Feature Extraction Using Adaptive Short-Time Kernel-Based Sparse Time-Frequency Distribution

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2023
The extraction of the micro-Doppler (m-D) feature based on time-frequency distribution (TFD) is of great significance for target detection and identification.

Neural activity associated with the passive prediction of ambiguity and risk for aversive events [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
In economic decision making, outcomes are described in terms of risk (uncertain outcomes with certain probabilities) and ambiguity (uncertain outcomes with uncertain probabilities).

Constrained Transmit Beampattern Design Using a Correlated LFM-PC Waveform Set in MIMO Radar

open access: yesSensors, 2020
This paper considers the design of a desired transmit beampattern under the good ambiguity function constraint using a correlated linear frequency modulation-phase coded (LFM-PC) waveform set in multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) radar. Different from

On the ambiguity function for accelerating target in FMCW radar

open access: yesJournal of Telecommunications and Information Technology, 2023
In the paper, we are concerned with FMCWradar detection of an accelerating target, echo of which is buried in an additive white Gaussian noise. We derive and analyze three-dimensional generalized ambiguity function for target range, velocity and ...

Random Access for Underwater Acoustic Cellular Systems

open access: yesSensors, 2018
In this paper, a random access preamble (RAP) design technique for underwater acoustic cellular systems is proposed. After showing that the conventional RAP used in long term evolution (LTE) systems is not appropriate for underwater acoustic cellular ...

Coarse-to-Fine Localization of Underwater Acoustic Communication Receivers

open access: yesSensors, 2022
For underwater acoustic (UWA) communication in sensor networks, the sensing information can only be interpreted meaningfully when the location of the sensor node is known. However, node localization is a challenging problem.

FDSS-Based DFT-s-OFDM for 6G Wireless Sensing

open access: yesSensors, 2023
Integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) is emerging as a key technology of 6G. Owing to the low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) property, discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (DFT-s-OFDM) is helpful to ...
