An evaluation of the amebicidal properties of metronidazole

Twenty patients with amebic ulcerative proctitis were treated with metronidazole. The rate of cure was 90 per cent. Metronidazole caused slight side-effects in 15 per cent of the patients.

Amebicidal Activity of Wild Animal Serum

The sera of 16 species of wild animals representing 5 classes of vertebrates were assayed for amebicidal activity against species of Naegleria. The greatest activity was observed for sera of bullfrogs, muskrats, and raccoons, all of which are animals associated with water.

The free-living amoebae from genus Acanthamoeba are the causative agents of granulomatous amebic encephalitis (GAE), a chronic progressive disease of the central nervous system; amebic keratitis (AK), a chronic eye infection; amebic pneumitis (AP), a chronic lung infection, and skin infection. Chemotherapy of Acanthamoeba infection is problematic.
