Body size plasticity in North American black and brown bears

open access: yesEcosphere, 2020
Body size reflects realized physiological niche width at the population level and provides insights into the potential resiliency of a species to natural and anthropogenic perturbations to ecosystems. We analyzed patterns of American black and brown bear

Black bear density in Glacier National Park, Montana

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, 2014
We report the first abundance and density estimates for American black bears (Ursus americanus) in Glacier National Park (NP), Montana, USA. We used data from 2 independent and concurrent noninvasive genetic sampling methods—hair traps and bear rubs ...

American black bears perceive the risks of crossing roads [PDF]

open access: yesBehavioral Ecology, 2018
When black bears cross roads, their HRs increase, indicating heightened alertness to danger. Wildlife reacts to roads in various ways, but it is unknown whether road crossings are stressful. We monitored black bears with cardiac monitors and GPS-collars in Minnesota.

Ecological plasticity of denning chronology by American black bears and brown bears

open access: yesGlobal Ecology and Conservation, 2019
Ecological plasticity may index the capacity of individuals, populations, and species to respond to stochasticity. Few studies have demonstrated mechanisms influencing expression of plasticity and less have addressed proximate and causal mechanisms at multiple scales.

Identification of carnivore kill sites is improved by verified accelerometer data

open access: yesAnimal Biotelemetry, 2020
Background Quantifying kill rates is central to understanding predation ecology. However, estimating kill rates and prey composition in carnivore diets is challenging due to their low densities and cryptic behaviors limiting direct observations ...

Late season frosts and changing snowpack may exacerbate human–bear conflicts

open access: yesEcosphere
The North American black bear (Ursus americanus) is an opportunistic omnivore that depends on seasonal availability of fruits, nuts, grasses, and forbs for survival.

Unintentional toxicosis from methylxanthines in chocolate‐based baits consumed by American black bears

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, 2016
The use of baits often increases success for many wildlife management activities, including wildlife capture for research, harvest by hunters and trappers during regulated activities, and lethal and nonlethal control for damage management.

Evaluation of dexmedetomidine, tiletamine, and zolazepam for the immobilization of black bears

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, 2015
Telazol® (TZ, tiletamine hydrochloride [HCl] and zolazepam HCl) has been used to immobilize black bears for research and management activities since the 1980s. Although considered an effective and safe drug, TZ has some disadvantages, including prolonged

Recent occurrence of an American black bear in Nebraska

open access: yesUrsus, 2009
Abstract We report on a young male, cinnamon-phase American black bear (Ursus americanus) that was collected in northwestern Nebraska on 12 May 2008. This specimen represents the first black bear taken in Nebraska since 1907. Cranial characteristics and mass of the individual indicated a 15–16 month old bear.
