Superconductivity of Americium
Science, 1978The metal americium becomes superconducting at temperatures as high as 0.79 K for the room temperature, double-hexagonal-close-packed phase. We also have evidence of a slightly higher transition temperature for the face-centered-cubic phase. This discovery of superconductivity in the midst of nonsuperconducting manmade elements is somewhat surprising.

Americium Concentrations in Solutions Contacting Americium-Doped Glass
Nuclear Technology, 1986Americium-doped glass (0.053 wt% /sup 241/Am) was contacted with dilute salt solutions (0.001 M NaCIO/sub 4/), pH buffers, Permian Basin brine (PBB1), and ten-times-diluted PBB1 to determine the aqueous americium concentrations that can be expected in equilibrium with this glass.

Lithium reduction of americium dioxide to generate americium metal
Journal of Nuclear Materials, 2002The lithium reduction process has been developed for application to a pyrochemical recycle process for oxide fuels. This process uses lithium metal as a reductant to convert oxides of actinide elements to metal. Lithium oxide generated as a product of the reduction would be dissolved in a molten lithium chloride bath to enhance reduction. In this work,

Americium(III) tetrachloro- and hexachloro-complexes, CsAmCl4(hydrated and anhydrous), Cs2NaAmCl6, and Cs3AmCl6 have been prepared. Their infrared spectra and some X-ray powder results are reported; the analyses of these compounds, and of the americium(V) chloro-complex, Cs3AmO2Cl4, are consistent with the new value (433 years) for the half-life of ...

To determine americium, we use either of the following methods: spectrometry at 60 keV, spectrophotometry of Am (III) at 503 nm or isotopic dilution mass spectrometry. These methods need reference materials. Now only certified for activity materials exist. So we developped titrimetric methods. The first is an original redox method.

The chemistry of americium and curium is discussed, and methods for producing these elements are reviewed. Americium shows reactions typical of a highly electropositive metal and is capable of existing in solution as a hydrated trivalent ion or as a doubly oxygenated (V)or (VI) ion.
