Genetic Transformation of Ammonia-Oxidizing Bacteria
2011The study of traits of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) by genetic transformation is an approach that is facilitated by the availability of AOB genome sequences. To transform an AOB, a vector construct is introduced into the cells by electroporation or conjugation to effect the inactivation, complementation, or expression of a selected gene.

Ecological characteristics of anaerobic ammonia oxidizing bacteria
Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, 2013Anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) is the microbial conversion of ammonium and nitrite to dinitrogen gas. The functional microbes of anammox reaction are anammox bacteria, which were discovered in a wastewater treatment system for nitrogen removal.

In this study, two laboratory nitrifying reactors (NRI and NRII), which were seeded by sludge from different sources and operated under different operating conditions, were found to possess distinct dominant ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms. Ammonia-oxidizing archaeal (AOA) amoA genes outnumbered ammonia-oxidizing bacterial (AOB) amoA genes in reactor ...

c-Cytochromes of the ammonia-oxidizing chemolithoautotrophic bacteria
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Bioenergetics, 1991The major enzymes associated with the oxidation of ammonia by chemolithoauthotrophic bacteria are studied, including some cytochromes c , are described and details of their properties are given.

Robust Nitritation Sustained by Acid-Tolerant Ammonia-Oxidizing Bacteria
Environmental Science & Technology, 2021Oxidation of ammonium to nitrite rather than nitrate, i.e., nitritation, is critical for autotrophic nitrogen removal. This study demonstrates a robust nitritation process in treating low-strength wastewater, obtained from a mixture of real mainstream sewage with sidestream anaerobic digestion liquor.

In situ Identification of Ammonia-oxidizing Bacteria
Systematic and Applied Microbiology, 1995Summary A 16S rRNA-targeted oligonucleotide probe (NEU) specific for some representatives of the lithoautotrophic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria was developed based on comparative sequence analysis. Whole cell hybridization of target cells in combination with digital microscopy was used to determine the optimal hybridization stringency.

Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) play important roles in nitrification in various environments. They may also be key communities for ammonia oxidation in composting systems, although few studies have discussed their presence. We investigated the relative diversity and abundance of AOB and AOA using cloning procedures,

Coexistence of an autotrophic ammonia-oxidizing bacterium (Nitrosomonas sp. RA) and heterotrophic bacteria was consistently observed when cultured in an inorganic medium without any external supply of organic carbon. The present study was undertaken to understand the association between autotrophs and the associated heterotrophs for which a system ...

Functional Gene Hybridization Patterns of Terrestrial Ammonia-Oxidizing Bacteria
Microbial Ecology, 1998Abstract The biochemical pathway and genetics of autotrophic ammonia oxidation have been studied almost exclusively in Nitrosomonas europaea. Terrestrial autotrophic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AAOs), however, comprise two distinct phylogenetic groups in the beta-Proteobacteria, the Nitrosomonas and Nitrosospira groups. Hybridization patterns were used

Biodegradation potential of wastewater micropollutants by ammonia-oxidizing bacteria
Chemosphere, 2009This study examined the biodegradation potential of three wastewater micropollutants (triclosan, bisphenol A, and ibuprofen) by Nitrosomonas europaea and mixed ammonia-oxidizing bacteria in nitrifying activated sludge. N. europaea could degrade triclosan and bisphenol A, but not ibuprofen.
