Ammonia Synthesis

open access: yesRoadsides
The essay rethinks the industrial infrastructures of ammonia synthesis and develops a notion of  specific associated toxicities. Particular interest is put on the “openness” of this infrastructure. High pressure plant facilities only work as cleary defined, controlled environments.

Mixed‐Metal Promotion in a Manganese‐Molybdenum Oxynitride as Catalyst to Integrate C─C and C─N Coupling Reactions for the Direct Synthesis of Acetonitrile from Syngas and Ammonia

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Transition metal oxy/carbo‐nitrides show great promise as catalysts for sustainable processes. A Mn‐Mo mixed‐metal oxynitride attains remarkable performance for the direct synthesis of acetonitrile, an important commodity chemical, via sequential C─N and C─C coupling from syngas (C1) and ammonia (N1) feedstocks.

Magnesium‐Mediated Electrochemical Synthesis of Ammonia

open access: yesAdvanced Science
Abstract Metal‐mediated electrochemical synthesis of ammonia (NH 3 ) is a promising method to activate N 2 at room temperature. While a Li‐mediated approach has been optimized to produce NH 3 at ...

COFs on MOFs: Layer‐by‐Layer Synthesis of MOF@COF Nanoparticles with Synergistic Adsorption

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A layer‐by‐layer strategy enables the growth of crystalline covalent organic framework (COF) shells on metal–organic framework nanoparticles, creating core–shell structures with tunable porosity. Ordered interstitial mesopores are formed during shell growth, which are connected with the COF's intrinsic micropores, thereby enhancing water sorption. This

Ambient Electrochemical Ammonia Synthesis: From Theoretical Guidance to Catalyst Design

open access: yesAdvanced Science
Ammonia, a vital component in the synthesis of fertilizers, plastics, and explosives, is traditionally produced via the energy‐intensive and environmentally detrimental Haber–Bosch process.

Heterogeneous Fe3 single-cluster catalyst for ammonia synthesis via an associative mechanism

open access: yesNature Communications, 2018
The current industrial ammonia synthesis relies on the Haber-Bosch process that is limited by the Brønsted–Evans–Polanyi relation. Here, the authors propose a new strategy that an anchored Fe3 on θ-Al2O3(010) surface serves as a heterogeneous single ...

Nature's Starships II: Simulating the Synthesis of Amino Acids in Meteorite Parent Bodies

open access: yes, 2015
Carbonaceous chondrite meteorites are known for having high water and organic material contents, including amino acids. Here we address the origin of amino acids in the warm interiors of their parent bodies (planetesimals) within a few million years of ...

Maximizing efficiency of rumen microbial protein production. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Rumen microbes produce cellular protein inefficiently partly because they do not direct all ATP toward growth. They direct some ATP toward maintenance functions, as long-recognized, but they also direct ATP toward reserve carbohydrate synthesis and ...

Porosity Engineering of MXene Architectures: Toward High‐Performance Aqueous Electrochemical Energy Storage

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This review systematically summarizes recent advances in porosity engineering of MXenes, with a focused discussion on their structure‐governed energy storage properties. A critical analysis of structure–property relationships is presented across alkali‐ion batteries, multivalent‐ion batteries, and supercapacitors.

Ammonia assimilation in Bacillus polymyxa. 15N NMR and enzymatic studies [PDF]

open access: yes, 1987
Pathways of ammonia assimilation into glutamic acid and alanine in Bacillus polymyxa were investigated by 15N NMR spectroscopy in combination with measurements of the specific activities of glutamate dehydrogenase, glutamine synthetase, glutamate ...
