Ammonia inhibition of interferon synthesis

Cell Biology International Reports, 1981
Ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) was found to markedly inhibit the ability of cultured human fibroblasts to establish an antiviral state following exposure to poly IC. This antiviral state was diminished by the simultaneous addition of as little as 200 microgram/ml of NH4Cl. The effects of ammonia on the superinduction of human fibroblast interferon (IFN-beta)

Utilization of ammonia for tryptophan synthesis

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1975
Abstract A strain of Escherichia coli in which the glutamine amidotransferase function (anthranilate synthetase component II) of anthranilate synthetase has been deleted synthesizes tryptophan using NH3-dependent anthranilate synthetase component I (AS-I). In NH3-limited media this strain is a tryptophan auxotroph.

Ammonia Synthesis at Atmospheric Pressure

Science, 1998
Ammonia was synthesized from its elements at atmospheric pressure in a solid state proton (H + )–conducting cell-reactor. Hydrogen was flowing over the anode and was converted into protons that were transported through the solid electrolyte and reached the cathode (palladium) over which nitrogen was passing.
