The introduction of a fifth amphibole group, the Na-Ca-Mg-Fe-Mn-Li group, defined by 0.50 < B(Mg, Fe2+, Mn2+, Li) < 1.50 and 0.50 < = B(Ca, Na) < = 1.50 apfu (atoms per formula unit), with members whittakerite and ottoliniite, has been required by recent discoveries of B(LiNa) amphiboles.

Differentiating Non-Asbestiform Amphibole and Amphibole Asbestos by Size Characteristics
Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene, 2008Mining or processing asbestos minerals can liberate isolated fibers or fiber bundles regulated as airborne asbestos fibers. Coarsely crystalline amphibole minerals are more common than asbestos in many geologic environments, and disturbance can result in the release of prismatic or acicular single crystals or cleavage fragments resembling asbestos ...

Long-Range Order in Amphiboles
Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry, 2007Comprehensive knowledge of the order-disorder relations in amphiboles is essential to (1) complete understanding of the crystal chemistry of these minerals, and to (2) the use of amphiboles in thermodynamic calculations (e.g., of temperature and pressure of equilibration) where accurate activity models are critical to the accuracy of such treatments ...

Calcic amphibole equilibria and a new amphibole-plagioclase geothermometer
Contributions to Mineralogy and Petrology, 1990There is currently a dearth of reliable thermobarometers for many hornblende and plagioclase-bearing rocks such as granitoids and amphibolites. A semi-empirical thermodynamic evaluation of the available experimental data on amphibole+plagioclase assemblages leads to a new thermometer based on the Aliv content of amphibole coexisting with plagioclase in
