Identification, evolution and expression of an insulin-like peptide in the cephalochordate Branchiostoma lanceolatum. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Insulin is one of the most studied proteins since it is central to the regulation of carbohydrate and fat metabolism in vertebrates and its expression and release are disturbed in diabetes, the most frequent human metabolic disease worldwide.

On a Hermaphrodite Specimen of Amphioxus with Notes on Experiments in Rearing Amphioxus [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom, 1914
A hermaphrodite specimen of Amphioxus has been taken at Plymouth having one gonadial pouch filled with ova and the remaining pouches filled with sperm. This specimen closely resembles a similar one taken by Goodrich at Naples. The liver and intestine of the Plymouth specimen are abnormal, but no parasites have been identified in the tissues to account ...

The conservation and uniqueness of the caspase family in the basal chordate, amphioxus

open access: yesBMC Biology, 2011
Background The caspase family, which plays a central role in apoptosis in metazoans, has undergone an expansion in amphioxus, increasing to 45 members through domain recombination and shuffling.

Somite Compartments in Amphioxus and Its Implications on the Evolution of the Vertebrate Skeletal Tissues

open access: yesFrontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology, 2021
Mineralized skeletal tissues of vertebrates are an evolutionary novelty within the chordate lineage. While the progenitor cells that contribute to vertebrate skeletal tissues are known to have two embryonic origins, the mesoderm and neural crest, the ...

Zoology: A New Mouth for Amphioxus [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Biology, 2016
Deuterostomes - a key subdivision of animals - are characterized by the mouth developing anteriorly as a rupture between the outer epithelium and the foregut wall. A new study of amphioxus challenges this view and proposes separate evolutionary origins of deuterostome oral openings.

Evolutionary history of the extant amphioxus lineage with shallow-branching diversification

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2017
Amphioxus or lancelets have been regarded as a key animal in understanding the origin of vertebrates. However, the evolutionary history within this lineage remains unexplored.

Retinoic Acid and POU Genes in Developing Amphioxus: A Focus on Neural Development

open access: yesCells, 2023
POU genes are a family of evolutionarily conserved transcription factors with key functions in cell type specification and neurogenesis. In vitro experiments have indicated that the expression of some POU genes is controlled by the intercellular ...

Evolution of cis-regulatory modules for the head organizer gene goosecoid in chordates: comparisons between Branchiostoma and Xenopus

open access: yesZoological Letters, 2019
Background In cephalochordates (amphioxus), the notochord runs along the dorsal to the anterior tip of the body. In contrast, the vertebrate head is formed anterior to the notochord, as a result of head organizer formation in anterior mesoderm during ...

Role of SoxE transcription factors in development and disease

open access: yesDevelopmental Dynamics, EarlyView.
Abstract Sox8, Sox9, and Sox10 arose by multiple rounds of genome duplications from a single SoxE gene in ancestral vertebrates. In this review, we will briefly discuss the molecular structure and function of SoxE transcription factors and their evolutionary origin. We will then discuss their expression, function, and developmental disorders.
