Six colour varieties were recognized in an intertidal population ofAmphipholis squamatafrom Normandy (France). Each variety exhibits its own capacity to produce light, the light emitted by the most luminous variety being 500 times more intense than that emitted by the least luminous one.

[Turning over in the ophiuroid Amphipholis kochii].
Zhurnal evoliutsionnoi biokhimii i fiziologii, 1977The reaction of turning over in the ophiuroid A. kochii Lütken begins when the ambulacral legs are detached from the substrate. At the bottom, when aboral side of the animal touches the substrate, turning over begins with oral flexion of three arms. In water, turning over begins with aboral flexion of all the arms.

The morphology and regeneration of the digestive system of the ophiuroid Amphipholis kochii were investigated. The epithelia of the esophagus and stomach of A. kochii were composed of typical enterocytes and mucous cells. The digestive epithelium of the stomach contained two types of granular secretory cells.

This paper addresses morphogenetic processes and cell differentiation during embryogenesis of the brittle star Amphipholis kochii at the ultrastructural level. The radial cleavage is not strictly determined. Embryos are covered with a thick hyaline envelope and contain numerous yolk granules and small lipid drops.
