The ultrastructure of the cuticle, fibrillar glands and stäbchen (see Reichensperger 1908) of the arm spines of the brittle star Amphipholis squamata are described. Stäbchen are shown to be cuticular projections into which pass one or more uniciliate cytoplasmic processes.
