Decadal Rapid Change in Energetic Carrying Capacity for Juvenile Chum Salmon in the Sanriku Coast

open access: yesFisheries Oceanography, Volume 35, Issue 4, Page 545-564, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Adult returns to coastal rivers in Sanriku, located near the southernmost area of chum salmon distribution, have declined since 2010. Climate‐induced fluctuations in juvenile prey availability may affect growth and survival, which are linked to adult returns.

Mass Die‐Off Events in Swarming Hyperiid Amphipods: Potential Drivers

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
Beach mass stranding events of marine organisms, widely documented worldwide, are triggered by a range of biotic and abiotic environmental factors, often unexplained. Such occurrences among pelagic crustaceans are less frequent, yet not uncommon. Here we

Induction of Seaweed Chemical Defenses by Amphipod Grazing

open access: yes, 1996
Grazing by the generalist amphipod Ampithoe longimana induced increased concentrations of defensive secondary metabolites in the brown alga Dictyota menstrualis and made the seaweed less susceptible to further attack by the amphipod.

The influence of a cooling water system on waterbird habitat use in a coastal environment

open access: yesIbis, Volume 168, Issue 3, Page 1148-1158, July 2026.
This study investigated the impact of a cooling water system at a nuclear power plant in northern Europe on coastal waterbird habitat use. In winter, the cooling water system provided preferential areas for waterbirds with warm productive waters, and, more importantly, with ice‐free areas.

From darkness to twilight: Morphological divergence between cave and surface‐subterranean ecotone Niphargus species

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
Subterranean and surface habitats are in stark contrast in several environmental factors. Therefore, adaptation to the subterranean environment typically impedes the (re)colonisation of surface habitats.

Adaptive Acoustic Monitoring for Endangered Cook Inlet Beluga Whales in Complex Soundscapes

open access: yesMarine Mammal Science, Volume 42, Issue 3, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Effective conservation of the endangered Cook Inlet beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas) requires comprehensive spatiotemporal data, yet monitoring efforts remain spatially biased, underrepresenting important southern habitats. Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) provides the necessary broad‐scale coverage, but its expansion introduces ...

Profundum solomoni (Amphipoda: Uristidae) Exhibits a Disjunct Geographic Distribution at Hadal Depths Across the San Cristobal Trench, Santa Cruz Trench and Nova Canton Trough

open access: yesZoologica Scripta, Volume 55, Issue 4, Page 639-651, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Hadal environments (> 6000 m ocean depths) are often viewed as isolated locations with high species endemism due to limited dispersal. However, molecular studies continue to reveal greater complexity that questions historical perceptions. Recent population genetic studies focused on scavenging amphipods have identified broadly distributed ...

Ampeliscidae (Crustacea, Amphipoda) from the IceAGE expeditions

open access: yesZooKeys, 2018
Ampeliscidae has been recorded extensively from Icelandic waters by many detailed reports. Material collected from the IceAGE (Icelandic marine animals: Genetics and Ecology) 1 and 2 expeditions has resulted in a reasonably expected collection of ...

The impacts of biological invasions

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 3, Page 1255-1310, June 2026.
ABSTRACT The Anthropocene is characterised by a continuous human‐mediated reshuffling of the distributions of species globally. Both intentional and unintentional introductions have resulted in numerous species being translocated beyond their native ranges, often leading to their establishment and subsequent spread – a process referred to as biological

Amphipod fauna of the Turkish central Black Sea region [Türkiye'nin Orta Karadeniz Bölgesi Amphipod Faunasi]

open access: yes, 2001
Following research into amphipod fauna in the central Black Sea region of Turkey, forty-two species of benthic amphipod were recorded. Of these, Ampelisca pseudospinimana. Gammarellus angulosus, Hyale crassipes. Leptocheirus pilosus.
