Air‐Pressure–Actuated Vibroacoustic Metamaterial With Tunable Bandgap: Design, Modeling, and Characterization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents the design, modeling, and characterization of air‐pressure–actuated programmable vibroacoustic metamaterials (PVAMM). The study focuses on leveraging air pressure to dynamically tune resonance frequencies for effective noise attenuation.

Turbo Coded and Cooperative Network Coded Non-Coherent Soft-Decision Star-QAM Dispensing with Channel Estimation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Star Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (Star-QAM) is a non-coherent detection aided scheme ideal for low-complexity wireless transceivers. In this contribution, we first derive soft-decision aided StQAM symbol-to-bit demapping combined with iterative ...

Karl Popper and the Mechanisms of Hydrogen Embrittlement

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Representation of the beginning of loss of ductility rather than embrittlement. Small concentrations of hydrogen in a diffusible form within iron are well‐established to harm the mechanical integrity of steels. There are theories that attempt to explain the pernicious role of hydrogen.

Measuring transient phase-amplitude coupling using local mutual information

open access: yes, 2019
Here we demonstrate the suitability of a local mutual information measure for estimating the temporal dynamics of cross-frequency coupling (CFC) in brain electrophysiological signals.

Fatigue Crack Initiation and Growth in Nanocrystalline Ni at Multiple Length‐Scales

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Overview of miniaturized in situ SEM fatigue setup and resultant fatigue crack growth data for nanocrystalline Ni. The presented study focuses on the analysis of fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) in focused ion beam‐notched microcantilevers prepared from nanocrystalline (NC) Ni as a model material.

TanDEM-X Water Indication Mask: Generation and First Evaluation Results

open access: yes, 2012
The German SAR interferometry mission TanDEM-X performed on two TerraSAR-X satellites flying in close formation will provide a global Digital Elevation Model (DEM). A by-product is so-called the Water Indication Mask (WAM).

The intelligibility of noise-vocoded speech:spectral information available from across-channel comparison of amplitude envelopes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Noise-vocoded (NV) speech is often regarded as conveying phonetic information primarily through temporal-envelope cues rather than spectral cues. However, listeners may infer the formant frequencies in the vocal-tract output—a key source of phonetic ...

Influence of Test Temperature and Test Frequency on Fatigue Life of Aluminum Alloy EN AW‐2618A

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The influence of test temperature and test frequency on the fatigue life of EN AW‐2618A is investigated. High‐cycle fatigue tests are performed at different test temperatures and frequencies on the 1000 h/230°C overaged state. Both test parameters reduce fatigue life due to time‐dependent damage mechanisms.
