Estimation of the signal-to-noise ratio with amplitude modulation spectrograms

Summary: An algorithm is proposed which automatically estimates the local signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) between speech and noise. The feature extraction stage of the algorithm is motivated by neurophysiological findings on amplitude modulation processing in higher stages of the auditory system in mammals.

We provide the first experimental test of the universality of a surface amplitude ratio near a critical end point by measuring the modified critical adsorption amplitude ratio, ${\mathit{R}}_{\mathit{M}\mathit{A}}$, for the liquid mixtures aniline+cyclohexane and isobutyric acid+water.

Universal amplitude ratios for scaling corrections on Ising strips

We study the (analytic) finite-size corrections in the Ising model on the strip with free, fixed (++), and mixed boundary conditions. For fixed (++) boundary conditions, the spins are fixed to the same values on two sides of the strip. We find that subdominant finite-size corrections to scaling should be to the form a(p)/N(2p-1) for the free energy f(N)

Summary: \textit{R. Sadr}, \textit{M. Shahshahani} and \textit{W.J. Hurd} [ibid. 35, 874- 878 (1989)] showed that when the maximum passband amplitude ripple is \(2\Delta\), then the signal-to-noise ratio is degraded by at most \((1- \Delta^2)\). A very simple proof is given in this correspondence.
