Physical activity and quality of life of amputees in southern Brazil [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Physical activity is a positive component of human health. Its effects are associated with improvement in physical, psychological and social aspects of quality of life. Physical activity is therefore an important factor in the rehabilitation of amputees.

Engineered Peptides‐Based Hybrid‐Nested Microneedle Effectively Treat Biofilm‐Infected Diabetic Wounds

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A hybrid‐nested microneedle/cryogel scaffold (MQW‐CMg‐MOF) is designed for efficient biofilm removal and accelerated healing of diabetic wounds. The scaffold shows substantial biofilm removal in vitro and in a preclinical diabetic swine biofilm‐infected wound model compared to the control.

The musculotendinous interface: insights into development, injury, and recovery for military medical applications

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology
Musculoskeletal injuries (MSKIs) are a major cause of morbidity and lost duty time for military service members, impacting overall military readiness, with overuse injuries being particularly prevalent among them. Musculotendinous injuries, affecting the

Lower-Limb Amputation in Children and Adolescents—A Rare Encounter with Unique and Special Challenges

open access: yesChildren, 2022
Background/Aim: The pattern of lower-limb amputation, indications, complications, and revision in pediatric cases differs globally. Therefore, we conducted this study to describe the patterns of lower-limb amputation at our institution. Methods: During a

Covalent Binding of Dexamethasone to Polyimide Improves Biocompatibility of Neural Implantable Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
The covalent binding of dexamethasone to the surface of polyimide represents the electrically inert part of implantable intraneural devices. This ensures a sustained release of the drug for 9 weeks. In vitro and in vivo tests confirm the reduction of the foreign body reactions and the improved biocompatibility of dexamethasone functionalized polyimide.

Association Between Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter 2 Inhibitors and Lower Extremity Amputation Among Patients With Type 2 Diabetes

open access: yesJAMA Internal Medicine, 2018
Importance Results of clinical trials suggest that canagliflozin, a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT-2) inhibitor for treating type 2 diabetes, may be associated with lower extremity amputation.

Engineering Cellular Self‐Adhesions Inside 3D Printed Micro‐Arches to Enhance Cell:Biomaterial Attachment

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Surprisingly, a cell can bind to itself to make a self‐adhesion, which engineered here to improve how cells attach to biomaterials. Nanoprinting are used to make 3D structures smaller than cells–called Self‐Adhesion‐Tunnels (SATs)–around which cells can wrap and bind to themselves.

Transmetatarsal Amputation Results in Higher Frequency of Revision Surgery and Higher Ambulation Rates Than Below-Knee Amputation

open access: yesFoot & Ankle Orthopaedics, 2022
Background: Selecting the level of amputation for patients with severe foot pathology can be challenging. The surgeon is sometimes confronted with an option between transmetatarsal amputation (TMA) and below-knee amputation (BKA).
