A Synovium‐on‐Chip Platform to Study Multicellular Interactions in Arthritis

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
The Synovium‐on‐Chip comprises a thin microporous PDMS membrane to support co‐culture of fibroblast‐like synoviocytes (FLS), THP‐1‐derived macrophages, and endothelial cells, enabling real‐time analysis of synovial‐vascular interactions. FLS migration through the pores drives endothelial remodeling, while TNF‐α stimulation induces robust inflammatory ...

Multifunctional Fluidic Units for Emergent, Responsive Robotic Behaviors

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A multifunctional reconfigurable fluidic unit can be used as sensor, valve and actuator is presented. A unique configuration combines the features of the three components as a Responsive self‐oscillating actuator. The remarkable versatility of the fluidic unit is demonstrated by building different robots with the same fluidic units only by varying ...

POM‐Based Water Splitting Catalyst Under Acid Conditions Driven by Its Assembly on Carbon Nanotubes

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A newly‐engineered POM‐based electrocatalyst incorporating non‐innocent counter cations exhibits fast kinetics for either the OER or HER under strongly acidic conditions (1 m H2SO4), depending on whether it is assembled on carbon nanotubes (1@CNT) or physically mixed with them (1/CNT). In water‐splitting tests using a two‐electrode setup, these systems

Performance Constraints of All‐Perovskite Tandem Solar Cells in Low‐Intensity, Low‐Temperature Environments

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
All‐perovskite tandem solar cells are evaluated under low‐intensity and low‐temperature (LILT) conditions relevant to space environments. Distinct loss regimes emerge, where weaker entropic mixing causes halide segragation below ≈240 K going along with a strong current imbalance, while poor electron transport in C60 dominates.

Light‐Induced Precipitation of an Inorganic Phosphate for Direct Writing of Thin Films and Templating Complex Mineral Morphologies

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Photoinduced patterning of inorganic materials promises advanced functionality, but often suffers from granular structures. Here, UV‐triggered dephosphorylation is used to guide the precipitation of barium phosphate with spatial control and structural continuity.

The realities of educator support in a South African school district

open access: yesSouth African Journal of Education, 2018
This paper explores support in primary schools in a single South African school district. The literature suggests an increased need for educator support in South Africa due to a myriad of curricular changes in the aftermath of apartheid, as well as a ...

Could Edible Photonic Structures Be an Alternative to Traditional Food Coloring?

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
What if color in food came from photonic structures? This perspective introduces structural color as a potential next‐generation solution to replace conventional colorants in foods. It discusses edible photonic materials, their unique benefits, and the technological, safety, and consumer acceptance challenges that must be addressed to bring this ...

Een moeiteloze dans

open access: yesHandelingen, 2022
We kennen allemaal wel de ervaring dat we in de ontmoeting met de ander, zonder dat we erop bedacht zijn, plotseling een heel bijzonder moment van verbondenheid in het contact gewaarworden.

RIG‐I Mediated Neuron‐Specific IFN Type 1 Signaling in FUS‐ALS Induces Neurodegeneration and Offers New Biomarker‐Driven Individualized Treatment Options for (FUS‐)ALS

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Using iPSC‐derived motoneurons and postmortem tissue from FUS‐ALS patients, it is demonstrated that increased mitochondrial transcription leads to elevated cytosolic double‐stranded RNA (dsRNA) levels. This aberrant accumulation activates a RIG‐I–dependent innate immune response leading to neurodegeneration, which is amenable for FDA‐ and EMA‐approved ...
