Effects of selective harvest on antler size of white‐tailed deer in Texas, USA

open access: yesWildlife Monographs, Volume 222, Issue 1, June 2026.
We conducted 20 years of experiments on the selective harvest of white‐tailed deer by antler size, judged inferior, in 2 areas of South Texas, USA. Selective harvest increased the phenotypic antler size of older males in one study area but not the other. There was little evidence of evolution resulting from selective harvesting. Abstract There has been

Identifying Key Biodiversity Areas Based on Distinct Genetic Diversity

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, Volume 26, Issue 2, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) are sites that contribute significantly to the global persistence of biodiversity. Distinct genetic diversity has been introduced as one of the metrics to estimate whether a site holds a threshold proportion of a species' global genetic diversity during the KBA identification process.

Social Determinants of Sepsis Mortality in the United States: A Retrospective, Epidemiologic Analysis

open access: yesWorld Medical &Health Policy, Volume 17, Issue 4, Page 823-830, December 2025.
ABSTRACT Sepsis is a leading cause of mortality in the United States, with over 350,000 deaths annually, yet the contribution of neighborhood‐level social determinants of health (SDoH) remains underexplored. We conducted a retrospective analysis of 4.4 million hospitalized patients with sepsis, identified using ICD‐10 codes, leveraging de‐identified ...

A meta‐analysis of the effect of visiting zoos and aquariums on visitors’ conservation knowledge, beliefs, and behavior

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 39, Issue 1, February 2025.
Abstract Zoos and aquariums are well placed to connect visitors with the issues facing biodiversity globally and many deliver interventions that seek to influence visitors’ beliefs and behaviors with respect to conservation. However, despite primary studies evaluating the effect of such interventions, the overall effect of engaging with zoos and the ...

Is it all about size? Dismantling the integrated phenotype to understand species coexistence and niche segregation

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 38, Issue 11, Page 2350-2368, November 2024.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Niche segregation is a mechanism by which competition between coexisting species is reduced. C‐reactive protein (CRP) in high altitude Bolivian peri‐urban adolescents varies by adiposity, current illness, height, socioeconomic status, sex, and menarcheal status: The potential benefits and costs of adipose reserves in arduous environments

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Human Biology, Volume 36, Issue 9, September 2024.
Abstract Objectives In non‐industrialized and low‐income populations, adipose stores can serve as a valuable buffer against harsh conditions such as seasonal food scarcity. However, these reserves may incur costs due to adipocytes' production of pro‐inflammatory cytokines; inflammation is associated with increased risk for cardiometabolic diseases ...

Decision Theory for the Variance Ratio in One-Way ANOVA with Random Effects

open access: yesRevista Colombiana de Estadística, 2015
Estimating a variance component in the model of analysis of variance with random effects and testing the hypothesis that the variance vanishes are important issues in many applications. Such inferences are beyond the confines of the standard (asymptotic)
