Bimetallic Nanoreactor Activates cGAS‐STING Pathway via mtDNA Release for Cancer Metalloimmunotherapy

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A bimetallic Mn–Ca nanoreactor (MCC) is developed as a non‐nucleotide STING nanoagonist for cancer metalloimmunotherapy. MCC induces Ca2+ overload and hydroxyl radical generation, resulting in mitochondrial damage and mtDNA release. The released mtDNA cooperates with Mn2+ to robustly activate cGAS–STING signaling.

Medical Fabrics with Non‐Antibiotic, Supramolecular Antimicrobial Coatings: A Preventive Approach to Combat Biofilm Formation and Bacterial Dissemination

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
The study presents an antibiotic‐free strategy using medical fabrics coated with supramolecular assemblies of polyarginine and hyaluronic acid. These coatings showed strong antimicrobial and anti‐biofilm activity in vitro and in vivo, achieving major bacterial load reductions, including against MRSA.

Characterisation of untreated and treated biodegradable wastes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
As part of a Defra sponsored project (WRT220), approximately 40 biodegradable wastes were characterised according to biodegradability (DR4 and BM100), total PTE content, C:N ratio and biochemical composition.

Modelling anaerobic digestion during temperature and load variations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Experimental results and simulations based on the Anaerobic Digestion Model No.1 (ADM1) with temperature effects on kinetics were used to evaluate rate limiting steps in sludge bed anaerobic digestion (AD) during load and temperature variations ...

Combining Electrochemical Reduction with Biosynthesis for Directed Conversion of CO2 into a Library of C3 Chemicals

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
In the H‐type electrolytic cell, carbon dioxide is reduced to acetic acid via electro‐microbial catalysis. The simply processed acetic acid is further converted through biological fermentation into high‐value‐added products, including acrylic acid, L‐lactic acid, and β‐alanine.

Optimization of the anaerobic co-digestion of pasteurized slaughterhouse waste, pig slurry and glycerine [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The feasibility of co-digestion of blends of two different animal by-products (pig manure and pasteurized slaughterhouse waste) and recovered glycerine was studied in mesophilic conditions.

Anaerobic biodegradation of estrogens—hard to digest

open access: yesWater Science and Technology, 2008
Although many publications are available on the fate of estrone (E1), 17β-estradiol (E2) and 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2) during aerobic wastewater treatment, little is published on their fate under strictly anaerobic conditions. Present research investigated the digestibility of E1 and EE2, using digested pig manure, granular UASB sludge, UASB-septic ...

General method for determining anaerobic biodegradation potential [PDF]

open access: yesApplied and Environmental Microbiology, 1984
A simple, generalized method was refined and validated to test whether an organic chemical was susceptible to anaerobic degradation to CH4 + CO2. The method used digested sewage sludge diluted to 10% and incubated anaerobically in 160-ml serum bottles with 50 micrograms of C per ml of test chemical.

Impacts of low biodegradable wastewater on biogas production from food wastes: a comprehensive review of challenges and enhancement strategies

open access: yesWaste Management Bulletin
Low biodegradability wastewater greatly restricts biogas production in co-digestion with food wastes in anaerobic digestion operations. This review critically addresses the impact of low biodegradability wastewater on biogas yield, process kinetics, and ...
