The Campylobacter concisus BisA protein plays a dual role: oxide-dependent anaerobic respiration and periplasmic methionine sulfoxide repair. [PDF]
MBio, 2023 Campylobacter concisus, an emerging pathogen found throughout the human oral-gastrointestinal tract, is able to grow under microaerobic or anaerobic conditions; in the latter case, N- or S-oxides could be used as terminal electron acceptors (TEAs ...

Weak acids produced during anaerobic respiration suppress both photosynthesis and aerobic respiration [PDF]
Nature Communications, 2023 While photosynthesis transforms sunlight energy into sugar, aerobic and anaerobic respiration (fermentation) catabolizes sugars to fuel cellular activities.

Fermentation, 2023 Chitin is one of the most abundant polymers in nature, with chitinous biomass often discarded as food waste and marine debris. To explore an effective way to degrade chitin, in this work, anaerobic sludge was inoculated at the anode of a two-chamber ...

Demystifying anaerobic respiration: a problem-solving exercise [PDF]
Journal of Microbiology & Biology EducationAnaerobic respiration reactions are of fundamental importance to global biogeochemical cycling of elements. Yet, the idea that cellular respiration can occur not only in the absence of oxygen but also involve the oxidation of inorganic substrates (e.g ...

Simultaneous aerobic and anaerobic respiration in hot spring chemolithotrophic bacteria [PDF]
Nature CommunicationsAerobic and anaerobic organisms and their functions are spatially or temporally decoupled at scales ranging from individual cells to ecosystems and from minutes to hours. This is due to competition for energy substrates and/or biochemical incompatibility

Cross-regulation of amino acid synthesis and anaerobic electron transfer by MetR-mediated methionine signaling [PDF]
Journal of BacteriologyMicroorganisms living in nutrient- and energy-limited environments must finely coordinate anabolic and catabolic pathways. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying this balance remain poorly understood.

Contribution of cell elongation to the biofilm formation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa during anaerobic respiration. [PDF]
PLoS ONE, 2011 Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a gram-negative bacterium of clinical importance, forms more robust biofilm during anaerobic respiration, a mode of growth presumed to occur in abnormally thickened mucus layer lining the cystic fibrosis (CF) patient airway ...
