Multiplanar anal endosonography – normal anal canal anatomy
Colorectal Disease, 2001IntroductionVolume acquisition during anal ultrasound enables multiplanar imaging of the anal canal. The normal ultrasonic multiplanar appearance of the anal canal is described and gender differences in canal anatomy are highlighted.MethodsTen male and 12 female normal volunteers (mean ages 31.5 years (s.d. 5.9) and 31.2 (s.d.

The principal prognostic factors for carcinomas which arise in the anal canal are similar to those of most other epithelial malignancies. The prognosis for survival deteriorates as the primary tumour enlarges and worsens as cancer metastasises to the regional lymph nodes and to extrapelvic sites.

Congenital fibrolipoma of anal canal
The Indian Journal of Pediatrics, 2003Although rare, congenital lipomatosis presents during first few months of life as large sub-cutaneous fatty masses on chest with extension into skeletal muscle bundles. Only a few such cases have been reported in the literature. A rare case of congenital fibrolipoma of anal canal in a 3-day-old male child is being documented in the present report.

Physical examination is an important part of the staging and planning process as well as adequate imaging studies. Standard studies include CT of the pelvis to assess the primary tumor and the status of regional lymph nodes. These tumors can be well visualized on PET, so a PET/CT scan is becoming a standard part of staging and planning to help ...

Endosonography of Anal Canal Diseases
Ultrasound Quarterly, 2002Anal endosonography became a valuable imaging method for diagnosis of anal diseases because of its accessibility, relative simplicity of performance, and low cost. It is used most often to detect anal sphincter defects, to classify anal fistulas and perianal abscesses, and to stage anal tumors.

Anal Canal Vector Volume Manometry
Diseases of the Colon & Rectum, 2011Anal manometry is routinely used in the assessment of the anal sphincters in patients with fecal incontinence or suspected sphincter injury. Such physiological information is complementary to the anatomical assessment provided by anal endosonography. The evolution of 3-dimensional anal endosonography provides more diagnostically useful information in ...

Radiation therapy with concurrent chemotherapy is the standard treatment for patients with nonmetastatic squamous cell carcinoma of the anal canal. In the studies that established this approach, high rates of locoregional control have been reported, but the incidence of acute and late toxicity has been significant.

Treatment of anal canal carcinoma
Cancer, 1985The treatment philosophy of anal canal carcinoma is changing. Abdominoperineal resection (APR) with a permanent colostomy is beginning to be replaced by lesser surgical techniques, such as excisional biopsy in a multimodality approach. Radical radiation therapy is capable of eradicating the primary tumor and yielding a high survival rate.

Abstract A case of leiomyoma of the musculature of the anal canal is reported. A short review of the literature regarding incidence of leiomyoma in the gastrointestinal tract is also included. This is believed to be the second case reported in the English literature.
