Digitally assisted analog beamforming for millimeter-wave communication [PDF]
This paper addresses the research question on how digital beamsteering algorithms can be combined with analog beamforming in the context of millimeter-wave communication for next generation (5G) cellular systems. Key is the use of coarse quantisation of the individual antenna signals next to the analog beamforming.

Transmit beamforming with analog channel state information feedback
In this paper, the performance of a closed-loop transmit beamforming system employing the ";unconventional"; technique of analog channel state information (CSI) feedback is studied. The use of analog or unquantized symbols for CSI feedback leads to a low feedback rate of only one symbol per transmit antenna per frame, and does not result in an ...

Beamforming via Kronecker Decomposition for Interference Cancellation in the Analog Domain
The integration of two complementary technologies, millimeter-wave (mmWave) communications and massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), will play a key role in enabling gigabit access in 5G systems. However, implementing mmWave massive MIMO using the traditional fully digital architecture will lead to prohibitive hardware complexity as it ...

Learning based Dynamic Codebook Selection for Analog Beamforming
2020 IEEE 92nd Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC2020-Fall), 2020In this paper, a dynamic codebook selection scheme is proposed for beam sweeping at millimeter wave receiver. The codebook selection problem is formulated as a Partially Observed Markov Decision Process (POMDP) and Q-learning method is used to learn a policy to dynamically select an appropriate codebook from a pre-defined codebook set in each beam ...

Analog beamforming for Full-Duplex Millimeter Wave Communication
2019 16th International Symposium on Wireless Communication Systems (ISWCS), 2019Full-duplex (FD) communication has the potential for significant improvements in spectral efficiency, as long as the problem of self-interference (SI) can be overcome. For millimeter wave (mmWave) systems with large antenna arrays, beamforming based SI mitigation is attractive because of the large number of degrees of freedom available.

An analog adaptive beamforming circuit for audio noise reduction
2012 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing (ICASSP), 2012We have designed and built the first commercially available all-analog adaptive beamforming integrated circuit utilizing a dual microphone array. Beamforming performs spatial filtering by exploiting time-of-arrival differences between microphones. Our analog implementation has the advantage of using very little power which is important in portable ...

On-Off Analog Beamforming with Per-Antenna Power Constraint
2017 IEEE 85th Vehicular Technology Conference (VTC Spring), 2017In this paper we propose a new analog beamforming structure by switching on or off each of multiple transmit antennas according to channel state information. The proposed analogue beamforming can significantly reduce the high cost, high power and bulky analogue phase-shifters which are employed in analog massive MIMO systems.

Reference Signals Design for Hybrid Analog and Digital Beamforming
IEEE Communications Letters, 2014There are many issues regarding the implementation of digital beamforming (BF) structures in massive MIMO: calibration, complexity, and cost. In a practical massive MIMO deployment, hybrid digital and analog BF structures with active antennas can be an alternative choice.

Microwave beamforming using analog signal processing
2008 IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society International Symposium, 2008We have presented a mobile Ku band satellite TV antenna array which is adaptively controlled by a simple continuous-time analog circuit performing gradient descent. The system achieves tracking speeds in excess of 60deg/s. The analog controller is expected to result in reduced system cost, power consumption and simpler VLSI integration.

Alternating beamforming methods for hybrid analog and digital MIMO transmission
2015 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC), 2015Hybrid beamforming has drawn attention with the increasing concern on high frequency band communication and the appearance of flexible structures of base stations. This paper considers the practical transmitter structure that each antenna is only connected to a unique RF chain and optimizes the analog and digital beamforming matrices to maximize the ...
