Analogical Proportions and Analogical Reasoning - An Introduction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Analogical proportions are statements of the form “a is to b as c is to d”. For more than a decade now, their formalization and use have raised the interest of a number of researchers. In this talk we shall primarily focus on their modeling in logical settings, both in the Boolean and in the multiple-valued cases.

Potential therapeutic targeting of BKCa channels in glioblastoma treatment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review summarizes current insights into the role of BKCa and mitoBKCa channels in glioblastoma biology, their potential classification as oncochannels, and the emerging pharmacological strategies targeting these channels, emphasizing the translational challenges in developing BKCa‐directed therapies for glioblastoma treatment.

Mitigating problems in analogy-based EBMT with SMT and vice versa: a case study with named entity transliteration [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Five years ago, a number of papers reported an experimental implementation of an Example Based Machine Translation (EBMT) system using proportional analogy.

LDAcoop: Integrating non‐linear population dynamics into the analysis of clonogenic growth in vitro

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Limiting dilution assays (LDAs) quantify clonogenic growth by seeding serial dilutions of cells and scoring wells for colony formation. The fraction of negative wells is plotted against cells seeded and analyzed using the non‐linear modeling of LDAcoop.

Teologia e kantismo nell’estetica di Mariano Campo

open access: yesAisthesis, 2017
Through the analysis of Mariano Campo’s (1892-1976) published works and thanks to further insights offered by some unpublished manuscripts, the profile of a philosopher is outlined, whose main interest, throughout his academic and research activity, has ...

The periodogram and its optical analogy

open access: yesProceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series A, Containing Papers of a Mathematical and Physical Character, 1906
I have recently applied the periodogram method to the investigation of several fluctuating quantities, and the experience thus gained has led me to modify slightly the original definition.

Metaphors in the Wealth of Nations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
This paper reconstructs the ways in which metaphors are used in the text of “The Wealth of Nations”. Its claims are: a) metaphor statements are basically similar to those in the “Theory of the Moral Sentiments”; b) the metaphors’ ‘primary subjects’ refer

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Kramers map approach for stabilization of hydrogen atom in a magnetic field

open access: yes, 1993
The phenomenon of stabilization of highly excited states of hydrogen atom in a strong monochromatic field is discussed. Approximate description of dynamics by the introduced Kramers map allows to understand the main properties of this phenomenon on the ...

A Dialogue on Concepts [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
This short dialogue, in Socratic prose, explores some of the most fundamental constructs in cognition: Concepts, thinking and analogy. In short, concepts are the atoms of thought and analogy is the 'ether' of concept formation. Therefore, thinking is the
