Un Balzac picassiano, un Picasso balzaquiano: Mr Frenhofer and the Minotaur, de Sidney Peterson
The article examines the short film Mr Frenhofer and the Minotaur (1949), the unique surrealistic adaptation that the American avant-garde director Sidney Peterson made of Balzac’s famous story Le Chef-d'œuvre inconnu (1837).

Triangulation of research methods in social phenomena research: anamorphic objection [PDF]
Starting from the problems of bias and validation in combining different research methods and methodologies, the paper discusses the advantages and shortcomings of triangulation. The triangulation concept which involves the use of more than one method to

« Un néant follement attifé » : macabre et grotesque dans Mesure pour Mesure
In an anamorphic play such as Measure for Measure, the grotesque is endowed with a strong satirical power, and its close relation to the macabre makes it even stronger. Shakespeare actually depicts a dramatic vanitas and places the morbid at the heart of

Abstract In hydrological research, data assimilation (DA) is a powerful tool for integrating observational data with numerical models, significantly enhancing predictive accuracy. However, nonlinear groundwater systems often exhibit high‐dimensional and non‐Gaussian characteristics in observations, parameters, and state variables, posing substantial ...

Remote Sensing Data Assimilation With a Chained Hydrologic‐Hydraulic Model for Flood Forecasting
Abstract Effective flood risk management requires reliable forecasts with extended lead times to enable the implementation of cost‐effective and timely measures. In this study, we present a chained hydrologic‐hydraulic modeling framework designed for effective near‐real‐time flood forecasting. The system integrates runoff predictions from a large‐scale

Ensemble Kalman filter in latent space using a variational autoencoder pair
The use of the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) in strongly nonlinear or constrained atmospheric, oceanographic, or sea‐ice models can be challenging. Applying the EnKF in the latent space of a variational autoencoder (VAE) ensures that the ensemble members satisfy the balances and constraints present in the model.

Setting the Stage for Deception. Perspective Distortion in World War I Camouflage
During World War I, in response to substantial advancements in wartime surveillance, it became a common practice to rely on “vision specialists” to devise effective methods of fooling the enemy (tromper l’ennemi).

Can ensemble‐based parameter estimation aid parameterization design?
Parameterization schemes rely on uncertain empirical parameters, the values of which can be estimated objectively and iteratively with ensemble data assimilation methods. Since all sources of forecast error in the background ensemble project onto parameter adjustments, the estimated parameters may converge to implausible values or not converge at all ...

Ensemble Kalman filters implicitly linearize the observation operator, which causes the posterior to deviate from its linear approximation. We quantify the linearization error for visible and infrared radiances and conclude that the linear approximation should not be used for nonlinear observation types.
