The most serious complication following esophagectomy and conventional intrathoracic esophagogastrostomy is anastomotic leakage, which contributes to both a high mortality and morbidity postoperatively. The incidence of anastomotic leakage reported in a recent 10 year period ranged from 3% to 18%, with a mean of 4.9%.
