Hydroacoustic Observations Reveal Drivers of Mixing and Salinization of a Karst Subterranean Estuary During Intense Precipitation

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 51, Issue 22, 28 November 2024.
Abstract Karst subterranean estuaries within globally ubiquitous carbonate aquifers are coastal groundwater ecosystems that provide an essential water resource for human populations. To understand the drivers of salinization within a coastal aquifer in the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico), we employed hydroacoustics in flooded caves to observe how oceanic ...

Unraveling the Complete Mitochondrial Genome of Potamalpheops Sp. (Purple Zebra Shrimp) (Crustacea: Decapoda) Provides Insights Into Its Phylogenetic Relationships and Gene Order Rearrangements

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 11, November 2024.
Potamalpheops sp. is the species belong to family Alpheidae, and this is the first report from Taiwan. Also, the mitogenome of this species has been sequenced for the first time as there was a lack of sequence information regarding this species.

Disturbance in the anchialine ecosystem: ramifications for ecology and physiology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Habitats in the anchialine ecosystem are defined as coastal ponds, pools, and caves that lack surface connections to the open ocean, but possess both seawater and freshwater influences due to subterranean connections to the ocean and groundwater.

‘Anchialine’ Redefined as a Subterranean Estuary in a Crevicular or Cavernous Geological Setting

open access: yes, 2015
An improved understanding of the anchialine ecosystem and geology warrants a redefinition of the term ‘anchialine.’ Originating from subareal biological observations, the term anchialine now encompasses chemical, physical, geological and biological ...

Shrimps down under: evolutionary relationships of subterranean crustaceans from Western Australia (Decapoda: Atyidae: Stygiocaris). [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2008
BACKGROUND:We investigated the large and small scale evolutionary relationships of the endemic Western Australian subterranean shrimp genus Stygiocaris (Atyidae) using nuclear and mitochondrial genes.

Water Sample Collection Methods for 222Rn Analysis by Scuba Diving: Insights on Groundwater Flushing of Anchialine Cave Systems of the Yucatan Peninsula

open access: yesWater Resources Research, Volume 60, Issue 8, August 2024.
Abstract Radon (222Rn) is a widely used tracer in groundwater and surface water studies. In some applications of radon, samples need to be collected from deep submerged areas or discharge points such as caves or springs, locations typically accessed by scuba diving. However, there are no established sampling methods for collecting water by scuba diving

New records of anchialine fauna from the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico [PDF]

open access: yesCheck List, 2015
New records for 17 species of crustaceans from anchialine systems in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, are presented. The records come from explorations in Dzilam de Bravo, Yucatan, and from Puerto Aventuras and the Nohoch Nah Chich and Ox Bel Ha cave ...

Morphology, Phylogeny, and Evolution of the Rarely Known Genus Admetella McIntosh, 1885 (Annelida, Polynoidae) with Recognition of Four New Species from Western Pacific Seamounts

open access: yesJournal of Zoological Systematics and Evolutionary Research, Volume 2024, Issue 1, 2024.
The polynoid genus Admetella constitutes a deep‐sea assemblage of polychaetes, notable for their large bodies adorned with antennal scales positioned dorsally to the bases of lateral antennae. Furthermore, the genus exhibits swimming proficiencies facilitated by elongated parapodia and flattened chaetae.

Evidence for an additional population of the cave-dwelling squat lobster Munidopsis polymorpha in Lanzarote (Canary Islands): implications for management and conservation

open access: yesJournal of Limnology
The endangered anchialine squat lobster Munidopsis polymorpha is restricted to northern Lanzarote. To understand genetic isolation and conservation risks, we genotyped 26 individuals at eight microsatellite loci from four sites in La Corona lava tube ...

A Distant Record of the Cavernicolous Land Crab, Discoplax gracilipes (Crustacea: Decapoda: Gecarcinidae) from Japan

open access: yesSpecies Diversity, 2023
A single specimen of gecarcinid crab, Discoplax gracilipes Ng and Guinot, 2001, was collected from an anchialine pool in a cave on Hateruma Island, southern Ryukyu Archipelago, southwestern Japan.
