Commodity risk assessment of Petunia spp. and Calibrachoa spp. unrooted cuttings from Costa Rica

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 22, Issue 11, November 2024.
Abstract The European Commission requested the EFSA Panel on Plant Health to evaluate the probability of entry of pests (likelihood of pest freedom at entry), including both regulated and non‐regulated pests, associated with unrooted cuttings of the genera Petunia and Calibrachoa produced under physical isolation in Costa Rica.

Aging later but faster: how StCDF1 regulates senescence in Solanum tuberosum

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 242, Issue 6, Page 2541-2554, June 2024.
Summary In potato, maturity is assessed by leaf senescence, which, in turn, affects yield and tuber quality traits. Previously, we showed that the CYCLING DOF FACTOR1 (StCDF1) locus controls leaf maturity in addition to the timing of tuberization. Here, we provide evidence that StCDF1 controls senescence onset separately from senescence progression and

Breeding for potato cyst nematode resistance in Solanum tuberosum

open access: yesCrop Science, Volume 64, Issue 3, Page 1167-1182, May/June 2024.
Abstract Two species of potato cyst nematodes (PCNs), Globodera rostochiensis (Woll.) and Globodera pallida (Stone), threaten potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) production worldwide. PCNs are remarkably persistent in soil and can reduce potato yield significantly. The most sustainable approach to PCN control is deploying resistant cultivars.

Yield reduction caused by elevated temperatures and high nitrogen fertilization is mitigated by SP6A overexpression in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.)

open access: yesThe Plant Journal, Volume 117, Issue 6, Page 1702-1715, March 2024.
Significance Statement Potato plants display diminished yield in response to heat stress, with traditional fertilization methods failing to negate this decrease. However, by overexpression of the tuberigen SP6A, we show improved nitrogen utilization, enabling these plants to maintain stable yields even under elevated temperature.
