Identifying polymorphic microsatellite loci for Andean bear research
Ursus, 2009Abstract The Andean (spectacled) bear (Tremarctos ornatus) is the only extant species of bear in South America. This species is considered Vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), although current population sizes are unclear.

Are There Andean Bears in Panamá
Ursus, 2008Abstract We present the results of a 2007 survey for Andean bears (Tremarctos ornatus) at Serrania de Pirre, Panama. We surveyed game trails using methodology developed by the Andean Bear Program of the Wildlife Conservation Society. We searched a total of 14 km along 3 trails and found 4 trees with claw marks resembling Andean bear activity signs.

Andean bear–livestock conflicts: a review
Ursus, 2006Abstract We review the state of knowledge regarding conflicts between the Andean bear (Tremarctos ornatus) and livestock. Information was gathered from the current known geographic range of the species (Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia).

An open-access occurrence database for Andean bears in Peru
Ursus, 2020The Andean bear (Tremarctos ornatus) is listed as a vulnerable species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature; however, the lack of knowledge regarding different aspects of its ecology, biogeography, and abundance hinders the conservation efforts of researchers and managers.

Seasonality of Andean Bear Scat Contents in Amazonas, Northeastern Peru
Ursus, 2021Characterizing a species' feeding habits has proved key to delimiting critical areas for species conservation. The Andean bear (Tremarctos ornatus), a species of conservation concern, inhabits the montane cloud forest and montane grasslands (jalca) of Amazonas, northeastern Peru. Knowledge of the bear's diet there is limited.

Genetic evidence confirms presence of Andean bears in Argentina
Ursus, 2014Abstract The Andean bear (Tremarctos ornatus) is found throughout the Andes Mountains from Venezuela to Bolivia. However, little is known about its distribution and range in southern areas, including Argentina. Our objective was to develop a genetic marker to identify this species by analysis of non-invasive samples (i.e., hair or feces). We designed a

Andean bear diet near to and far from a road
Ursus, 2020Despite the existence of several regional studies on the diet of the Andean bear (Tremarctos ornatus), there is a lack of information about the effects of human disturbances on this species' foraging ecology. Our main goal was to compare Andean bear diet composition between a disturbed area (DA) close to a paved road versus an undisturbed area (UA) far

Diet of Andean bears in Tamá National Natural Park, Colombia
Ursus, 2020Diet is among the most important and basic ecological aspects of a species. Information on diet composition, seasonality, and spatial variation is necessary for adequate ecological understanding and therefore conservation. Andean bears (Tremarctos ornatus) have been poorly studied across their distribution, and especially in Colombia; therefore, most ...

Hematological and serum biochemical values of Andean bears in Ecuador
Ursus, 2010Abstract We collected blood samples (n = 49) from 43 Andean Bears (Tremarctos ornatus) in Ecuador between September 1995 and May 2006 and analyzed them for 11 serum biochemical and 13 hematological parameters. Results were grouped and compared according to the bears' life condition (captive or free-ranging), sex, age, and body mass.

Phenotypic plasticity in the timing of reproduction in Andean bears
Journal of Zoology, 2018AbstractMany factors influence whether mammals reproduce seasonally or continuously but disentangling them can be challenging in free‐living species that are hard to observe. We described the seasonality of reproduction in Andean bears (Tremarctos ornatus) in NW Peru (6°26′S, 79°33′W) to test for phenotypic plasticity in response to extrinsic cues.
