Causality of genetically determined glucosamine supplementation on cognition and sarcopenia: a Mendelian randomization study

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology
BackgroundEvidence indicates a negative link between glucosamine and age-related cognitive decline and sarcopenia. However, the causal relationship remains uncertain.

Airflow recovery from thoracic and abdominal movements using Synchrosqueezing Transform and Locally Stationary Gaussian Process Regression [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Airflow signal encodes rich information about respiratory system. While the gold standard for measuring airflow is to use a spirometer with an occlusive seal, this is not practical for ambulatory monitoring of patients. Advances in sensor technology have made measurement of motion of the thorax and abdomen feasible with small inexpensive devices, but ...

Quantification of depth of anesthesia by nonlinear time series analysis of brain electrical activity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
We investigate several quantifiers of the electroencephalogram (EEG) signal with respect to their ability to indicate depth of anesthesia. For 17 patients anesthetized with Sevoflurane, three established measures (two spectral and one based on the bispectrum), as well as a phase space based nonlinear correlation index were computed from consecutive EEG

Local Anesthesia in Carotid Angioplasty

open access: yesJournal of Endovascular Therapy, 1996
Purpose: To determine the safety and efficacy of local anesthesia for percutaneous carotid angioplasty and stenting performed via a direct common carotid access. Methods: Deep cervical plexus blockade was used for anesthesia in 22 of 32 patients (26 males; mean age 66 years) undergoing percutaneous carotid balloon angioplasty and/or stenting via direct

Bioresorbable and Wireless Rechargeable Implanted Na‐ion Battery for Temporary Medical Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
An all‐solid‐state bioresorbable Na‐ion battery is developed, composed entirely of bio‐eliminable materials. In vivo and ex vivo tests confirmed harmless disintegration of this implanted battery. Lifetime of the implanted battery can be precisely controlled by adjusting the dissolvable encapsulation layer's thickness.

Engineering the Hierarchical Porosity of Granular Hydrogel Scaffolds Using Porous Microgels to Improve Cell Recruitment and Tissue Integration

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, Volume 35, Issue 12, March 18, 2025.
By fabricating and covalently assembling gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) porous microgels, a new class of granular hydrogel scaffolds with hierarchical porosity is developed. These scaffolds have a significantly higher void fraction than their counterparts made up of nonporous microgels, enhancing cell recruitment and tissue integration. This research may

Carotid Endarterectomy Under Local Anesthesia: An Alternative Treatment for Carotid Stenosis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Purpose. Carotid artery stenosis accounts for approximately 10% of all ischemic strokes, causing significant morbidity and mortality. Historically the standard of care for surgical candidates for carotid stenosis was carotid endarterectomy, traditionally

Biomimetic Design of Biocompatible Neural Probes for Deep Brain Signal Monitoring and Stimulation: Super Static Interface for Immune Response‐Enhanced Contact

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Ultrathin, flexible neural probes are developed with an innovative, biomimetic design incorporating brain tissue‐compatible materials. The material system employs biomolecule‐based encapsulation agents to mitigate inflammatory responses, as demonstrated through comprehensive in vitro and in vivo studies.

An Adaptive Neuro-fuzzy Strategy in Closed-loop Control of Anesthesia [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
This paper proposes an adaptive neuro-fuzzy framework to improve drug infusion rate in closed-loop control of anesthesia. The proposed controller provides a sub-optimal propofol administration rate as input to reach the desired bispectral index, which is the output of the system, in both induction and maintenance phases.
